Here are 5 common myths, debunked]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For example, ridesharing company Cabify was founded in Spain and has raised <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/cabify\">a staggering $477 million<\/a> to date from well-known investors including Rakuten Capital. The company, which is a tech unicorn, currently operates in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/12\/19\/spains-glovo-grabs-166m-series-e-for-its-deliver-anything-app\/\">Fellow unicorn<\/a> Glovo was founded in Barcelona in 2015. The company offers an on-demand courier service that buys, picks up, and delivers items ordered through its smartphone app.<\/p>\n<p>Over in Portugal, Lisbon-born OutSystems <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.outsystems.com\/News\/outsystems-raises-360-million-investment-from-kkr-and-goldmansachs\/?v=home&amp;utm_content=bufferd1093&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=linkedin.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\">joined the tech unicorn club<\/a> in 2018. Several months later it was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-10-03\/talkdesk-raises-100-million-to-make-customer-service-less-terrible\">joined by Talkdesk<\/a>,\u00a0<span>a provider of cloud-based contact center software, which although founded in Portugal in 2011 is now headquartered in San Francisco.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Spanish and Portuguese companies are making waves, so what needs to happen in order for everyone to appreciate the ecosystems as much as I do?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Growing_in_the_Iberian_Peninsula\"><\/span>Growing in the Iberian Peninsula<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Aside from the obvious attraction \u2014 excellent quality of life, good weather all year round, and delicious food (!) \u2014 there are many reasons why the Iberian Peninsula is open for business.<\/p>\n<p>Ok yes, I\u2019ll be the first to admit that scaling a tech company in Portugal and Spain comes with its own set of unique challenges. However, there are also opportunities for entrepreneurs seeking to build businesses and investors looking to grow their portfolios \u2014 often by snapping up companies at much cheaper valuations.<\/p>\n<p>Talent is technically as good as elsewhere and it\u2019s often cheaper, says\u00a0Adao Oliveiro, an investment manager at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.portugalventures.pt\/\">Portugal Ventures<\/a>, a venture capital firm with \u20ac450 million in assets under management. \u201cBut we need to be better at pitching ourselves,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Cool, Spanish and Portuguese entrepreneurs need to blow their own trumpet more? No worries, they can take lessons from me!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_confident_get_money\"><\/span>Get confident, get money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Javier Mateo, deputy director of entrepreneurship at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/valenciactiva.valencia.es\/\">Val\u00e8ncia Activa<\/a> \u2014 Valencia\u2019s network of innovative entrepreneurs launched by the city\u2019s council \u2014 agrees, noting how Spain needs to overcome somewhat of an inferiority complex with regards to its European counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Both countries, Mateo and Oliveiro agree,\u00a0need to get better at showing off their qualities.\u00a0There\u2019s also room for improvement when it comes to access to capital, particularly beyond Series A, but this hasn\u2019t stopped Spain or Portugal birthing tech unicorns. One can only help but wonder what the region could produce with even more funding.<\/p>\n<p>This only scratches the surface, though.
