\n Mark David Chapman, who killed John Lennon in 1980, has apologized to the famed singer\u2019s wife Yoko Ono \u2014 describing his crime as \u201cdespicable\u201d and saying he \u201cdeserves\u201d the death penalty, according to a report.<\/p>\n

The 65-year-old \u2014 who was denied parole on Aug. 19 \u2014 gunned the 40-year-old Beatles star down as he and Ono walked toward The Dakota building on the Upper West Side.<\/p>\n

Chapman told the parole board that he killed Lennon for \u201cself-glory,\u201d the Telegraph reported<\/a>, citing the transcript<\/a> of the parole hearing obtained by the PA news<\/a> agency.<\/p>\n

\u201cI assassinated him\u2026 because he was very, very, very famous and that\u2019s the only reason and I was very, very, very, very much seeking self-glory, very selfish,\u201d Chapman said in his apology to Lennon\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to add that and emphasize that greatly. It was an extremely selfish act. I\u2019m sorry for the pain that I caused to her (Ono). I think about it all of the time,\u201d he added at the hearing, which was held at Wende Correctional Facility in Erie County.<\/p>\n

Chapman, who became eligible for parole in 2000, is required to have a parole hearing every two years but was denied release for the 11th time on the grounds it \u201cwould be incompatible with the welfare of society,\u201d the Telegraph reported.<\/p>\n

Ono has written to the board for several of the hearings to warn that Chapman continues to pose a threat to her and her family.<\/p>\n

The 87-year-old has not commented about his apology, but tweeted about an Oct. 9 event to mark what would have been her husband\u2019s 80th birthday.<\/p>\n

In last month\u2019s heating, Chapman also discussed his fixation with the book \u201cThe Catcher In The Rye<\/a>\u201d at the time of the murder, saying he could relate with the main character\u2019s \u201cisolation, loneliness\u201d.<\/p>\n

Asked if justice had been served, he told the panel: \u201cWhen you knowingly plot someone\u2019s murder and know it\u2019s wrong and you do it for yourself, that\u2019s a death penalty right there in my opinion.<\/p>\n

Chapman added: \u201cIf the law and you choose to leave me in here for the rest of my life, I have no complaint whatsoever.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
