{"id":725943,"date":"2026-05-07T04:10:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T01:10:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/atari-acquires-wizardry-ip\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T04:10:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T01:10:30","slug":"atari-acquires-wizardry-ip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/atari-acquires-wizardry-ip\/","title":{"rendered":"Atari acquires Wizardry IP"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Atari has acquired the rights to the first five\u00a0<em>Wizardry<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s and the underlying\u00a0<em>Wizardry<\/em> intellectual property from Drecom, the company <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20260506151146\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>. <span id=\"more-1046180\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The acquired titles include <em>Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord<\/em> (1981), <em>Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds<\/em> (1982), <em>Wizardry III: Legacy of Llylgamyn<\/em> (1983), <em>Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna<\/em> (1987), and <em>Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom<\/em> (1988), as well as \u201cmany other <em>Wizardry<\/em>-related video games, contract rights, and other related intellectual property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Atari plans to bring back the \u201cOriginal <em>Wizardry<\/em>\u201d \/ \u201cThe Llylgamyn Saga\u201d games, which \u201cset the cornerstone for the Japanese RPG genre,\u201d through expanded digital and physical distribution and the creation of remasters, collections, and new releases.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to game publishing, merchandise, card and board games, books and comics, and TV and film projects are planned as part of a long-term plan to build an entertainment franchised based on the original \u00a0games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Andrew Greenberg and I created <em>Wizardry<\/em> back in the 1980s, the video game industry was still in its infancy, and the original games were some of the first to bring the role-playing experience to PCs and consoles,\u201d said\u00a0<em>Wizardry<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> co-creator Robert Woodhead in a press release. \u201cAs Atari continues to reintroduce the games on new platforms and to new audiences, I\u2019ll definitely be paying attention to the reactions of gamers who decide to take on a real old-school challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Atari CEO and chairman Wade Rosen added, \u201c<em>Wizardry<\/em> is such an influential RPG franchise, yet many of the games have been unavailable for more than two decades. We are excited to have this rare opportunity to republish, remaster, and bring console ports and physical releases of these early games to market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- AD: content --><\/p>\n<p>Atari-owned studio Digital Eclipse already released a remake of <em>Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord<\/em> in 2024. At the time, it was licensed by Drecom, which acquired the intellectual property in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Drecom will retain ownership of <em>Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge<\/em>, <em>Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant<\/em>, and <em>Wizardry 8<\/em>, which are based on a different fictional universe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
