\n The advanced car battery technology<\/a> Tesla is expected to unveil this week won\u2019t be widely available for another two years, CEO Elon Musk says.<\/p>\n

The Silicon Valley automaker is set to reveal its latest innovations at Tuesday\u2019s \u201cBattery Day\u201d event, but Musk said they \u201cwill not reach serious high-volume production until 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe extreme difficulty of scaling production of new technology is not well understood,\u201d the billionaire tech tycoon tweeted<\/a> Monday. \u201cIt\u2019s 1000% to 10,000% harder than making a few prototypes. The machine that makes the machine is vastly harder than the machine itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk said Tuesday\u2019s announcements would affect long-term production for Tesla\u2019s Cybertruck and Roadster models as well as the electric semi truck the company unveiled nearly three years ago.<\/p>\n

The highly anticipated event is expected<\/a> to include details of Tesla\u2019s plans to produce its own battery cells along with the possible rollout of a \u201cmillion mile\u201d battery that can go roughly twice as far as the company\u2019s current technology.<\/p>\n

But Musk indicated Tesla plans to buy more battery cells from partner companies including Panasonic, LG and CATL while it beefs up its own technology. Even with those increased purchases, Tesla expects \u201csignificant\u201d battery shortages in 2022 and beyond \u201cunless we also take action ourselves,\u201d he tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tesla shares tumbled 5.1 percent in premarket trading to $426.45 as of 7:57 a.m. ahead of Tuesday\u2019s event, which Musk has said will be \u201cvery insane.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
