Premier <strong>John Horgan<\/strong> called the\u00a0rare weekend election after a quick consult with Lieutenant Governor <strong>Janet Austin<\/strong> yesterday morning. Saskatchewan also has to vote on or before <strong>Oct. 26<\/strong>, the same day two federal by-elections will fill Toronto vacancies. A week and a day after that, Americans will vote for their next president on <strong>Nov. 3<\/strong>. The pandemic didn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to deter New Brunswickers from voting earlier this month. Will chilly October weather, and rising case counts, deter the next round of voters?<\/p>\n<p>Horgan took his lumps for calling a snap election amidst a pandemic. Green leader\u00a0<strong><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Sonia Furstenau<\/span><\/strong>, the NDP\u2019s legislative dance partner, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SoniaFurstenau\/status\/1308100130310991872\">said<\/a> Horgan has \u201cchosen the pursuit of power over the health and safety of British Columbians.\u201d The premier said the coronavirus isn\u2019t about to vanish, and a safe election may just as difficult in a year\u2019s time. Horgan\u2019s lead is big. But every political insider will butt into this conversation to repeat their favourite adage: <strong>campaigns matter<\/strong>. For starters, the backdrop to Horgan\u2019s presser was\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ben_Parsons__\/status\/1308108499298054144\">not ideal<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The feds yesterday doled out <strong>$1 billion<\/strong> for what they\u2019re calling <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca\/en\/media-newsroom\/news-releases\/2020\/canada-rapidly-create-affordable-housing-support-homeless\">\u201crapid\u201d affordable housing<\/a>. The funding envelope falls under <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Development Minister <strong>Ahmed Hussen<\/strong>, and it\u2019ll \u201ccover the construction of modular housing, as well as the acquisition of land, and the conversion of existing buildings to affordable housing.\u201d\u00a0<strong>Adam Vaughan<\/strong>, Hussen\u2019s parliamentary secretary, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TOAdamVaughan\/status\/1308104155693801478\">explained why<\/a> the money was announced before the Commons returns. \u201cIt comes in front of the Throne Speech because the urgency is now,\u201d he said. \u201c<strong>We can\u2019t wait for a debate<\/strong> in the House of Commons. <strong>We can\u2019t wait for a budget<\/strong> in the fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jim\u00a0Karygiannis<\/strong>, the Toronto city councillor and longtime MP who\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/city_hall\/2020\/06\/27\/ousted-toronto-city-councillor-jim-karygiannis-taking-bid-to-reclaim-seat-to-supreme-court.html\">fighting for his political life<\/a>, will learn his fate this Thursday. A judge removed Karygiannis from office for claiming ineligible campaign expenses in 2018. Another judge overturned that decision before a third judge re-removed him. Yet another judge stayed that latest decision, so\u00a0Karygiannis remains a councillor. This week, the ultimate deciders on the <strong>Supreme Court<\/strong> bench <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scc-csc.ca\/case-dossier\/info\/sum-som-eng.aspx?cas=39261\">will chime in<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The asks are in for tomorrow\u2019s <strong>Speech from the Throne<\/strong>. Kevin Lynch, a former Privy Council clerk, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-the-throne-speech-must-focus-on-growing-the-economy\/\">says<\/a> the speech should focus on \u201cgrowing the economy.\u201d\u00a0Hassan Yussuff, the president of the <strong>Canadian Labour Congress<\/strong>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/09\/21\/2096701\/0\/en\/Throne-speech-must-move-the-country-forward.html\">says<\/a> it should make \u201cfirm commitments\u201d on child care and pharmacare. Perrin Beatty, who heads up the <strong>Canadian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thepost.on.ca\/opinion\/columnists\/beatty-throne-speech-must-include-a-lifeline-for-restaurants\/wcm\/e7a89383-7c2d-4260-9ec9-941a70103cf2\">says<\/a> it \u201cmust include a lifeline for restaurants.\u201d Bruce Campbell, a York University prof, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-throne-speech-must-blaze-a-bold-new-path-including-imposing-a-wealth-tax-145747\">says<\/a> it should introduce a new wealth tax. WWF-Canada <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwf.ca\/take-action\/one-earth-one-voice\/\">says<\/a> it should focus on a green recovery. Bloomberg <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/trudeau-poised-announce-three-pillar-185012258.html\">got some hints<\/a> of what\u2019s\u00a0<em>actually<\/em> in the speech.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carbon price\u00a0politics:<\/strong>\u00a0The Supremes have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/7347831\/supreme-court-of-canada-appeals-carbon-tax\/\"><strong>another epic trial<\/strong><\/a> on their hands this week, as two days of hearings\u2014starting today\u2014will pit three provinces against the federal government on the question of who gets to slap a price on carbon. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario have all challenged the federal carbon tax. Two appeals courts have upheld Ottawa\u2019s view, while Alberta ruled it unconstitutional. But hold on. Yesterday, the feds approved the emissions plans of both <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/statement\/58455\/statement-from-minister-yurek-on-federal-acceptance-of-ontario-emissions-performance-standards\">Ontario<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/nb-federal-approval-carbon-tax-warning-1.5732314\">New Brunswick<\/a> (another critic of the law). Enviro Minister <strong>Jonathan Wilkinson<\/strong> claimed both plans were\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/7348494\/nb-ont-carbon-prices-bi-emitters-approved\/\">weaker than his<\/a>\u00a0at reducing emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tina Namiesniowski<\/strong>, until recently the head of the Public Health Agency of Canada,\u00a0will take up a new gig as \u201csenior official\u201d in the Privy Council Office. Asked what that role entails, the PCO would only say that senior official stylings are \u201cused on a case by case basis and take into account transitions in the senior ranks of the public service.\u201d\u00a0Namiesniowski will be replaced at PHAC by\u00a0<b><span lang=\"EN-US\">Iain Stewart<\/span><\/b>, the head of the National Research Council and a two-decade veteran of the public service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark your calendars:<\/strong> After a brief summer hiatus, <em>Maclean\u2019s Live<\/em> is back. On the heels of the carbon-tax hearings and Throne Speech drama, what better time could there be to chat up the environment minister?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quebec puts the heat back on Trudeau:<\/strong>\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Legault may be a popular premier, but former NDP leader\u00a0<strong>Tom Mulcair<\/strong> writes in <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em> that\u00a0Legault\u2019s government badly mishandled the first wave of the global pandemic\u2014and, in Quebec, a distraction in the form of a rollicking debate over language laws \u201cis always great sport in La Belle Province.\u201d Mulcair warns that Prime Minister <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> has been caught off-guard by similar debates, which are normally comfortable territory for federal Liberals.
