He recorded <em>Shore<\/em> in Manhattan, Long Island City, Paris, Los Angeles, and at the National\u2019s Long Pond Studio in Hudson.<\/p>\n<p>Contributors to <em>Shore<\/em> include Uwade Akhere (who sings on the opening \u201cWading in Waist-High Water\u201d), drummers Chris Bear and Homer Steinweiss, composer and artist Meara O\u2019Reilly, Portuguese singer Tim Bernardes, Hamilton Leithauser and his family, Daniel Rossen, Kevin Morby, violist\/violinist Marta Sofia Honer, guitarist Michael Bloch, and recording and production engineer Beatriz Artola. There is also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/youtu.be\/oBDrXMWoRpw&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oBDrXMWoRpw\">a sample of Brian Wilson<\/a> on <em>Shore<\/em>\u2019s \u201cCradling Mother, Cradling Woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a lengthy statement about the new album, Pecknold explained that he was heavily inspired by Arthur Russell, Nina Simone, Jo\u00e3o Gilberto, Sam Cooke, and more. He stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote-embed blockquote-embed--has-top-border\">\n<div class=\"blockquote-embed__content\">\n<p>I wanted to make an album that <strong>celebrated life in the face of<br \/>\ndeath<\/strong>, honoring our lost musical heroes explicitly in the lyrics and<br \/>\ncarrying them with me musically, committing to <strong>living fully and<br \/>\nvibrantly in a way they no longer can<\/strong>, in a way they maybe couldn\u2019t<br \/>\neven when they were with us, despite the joy they brought to so many.<br \/>\nI wanted to make an album that felt like a <strong>relief<\/strong>, like your toes<br \/>\nfinally touching sand after being caught in a rip current. I wanted<br \/>\nthe album to exist in a liminal space <strong>outside of time<\/strong>, inhabiting<br \/>\nboth the future and the past, accessing something spiritual or<br \/>\npersonal that is untouchable by whatever the state of the world may be<br \/>\nat a given moment, whatever our season. I see \u201cshore\u201d as a place of<br \/>\nsafety on the edge of something uncertain, staring at Whitman\u2019s waves<br \/>\nreciting \u201cdeath,\u201d <strong>tempted by the adventure of the unknown at the<br \/>\nsame time you are relishing the comfort of the stable ground beneath<br \/>\nyou<\/strong>.
