Roland Emmerich<\/strong>, the master of cinematic disaster, is gearing up for another big-budget disaster movie called Moonfall<\/strong><\/em>, and now he\u2019s found his leading man.<\/p>\n

Patrick Wilson<\/strong> (The Conjuring<\/em>, Aquaman<\/em>) has been cast as the film\u2019s protagonist, and he\u2019ll play a disgraced astronaut who\u2019s called back into action when the moon is suddenly put on a crash course with Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news<\/a> about Wilson and revealed that Charlie Plummer<\/strong> (All the Money in the World<\/em>, Boardwalk Empire<\/em>, Lean on Pete<\/em>) has also joined the cast. Wilson is set to play \u201ca disgraced former NASA astronaut whose last mission, which ended in tragedy, holds a clue about the impending catastrophe,\u201d while Plummer will play his teenaged son. Naturally, that \u201cimpending catastrophe\u201d is that the moon is somehow on a collision course with Earth after being knocked out of its orbit by a mysterious force. And in a very Armageddon<\/em>-sounding scenario, a ragtag team is sent to the moon\u2019s surface to try to avert the crisis with only weeks until impact.<\/p>\n

Halle Berry<\/strong>\u00a0(Monster\u2019s Ball<\/em>, Swordfish<\/em>) is on board as a former colleague of Wilson\u2019s protagonist, while\u00a0Josh Gad<\/strong>\u00a0(Frozen<\/em>, Beauty and the Beast<\/em>) is playing the \u201cJeff Goldblum in Independence Day<\/em>\u201d archetype: an eccentric genius who first discovers that the moon is no longer in its proper orbit. All we need now are a bunch of veteran character actors to play general<\/a>s and experts who argue their way around a massive table, uttering things like \u201cMy God\u201d and \u201cDo you have any idea what this means?!\u201d and \u201cGet me the President on the phone!\u201d<\/p>\n

In all seriousness, Wilson is an excellent choice for this type of \u201990s throwback. He\u2019s always a compelling presence on screen, bolstered by the fact that he can shift between everyman and exceptional in the blink of an eye. He can also play \u201chaunted by a traumatic event from his own past\u201d with the best of \u2019em, and this role sounds like the straight-ahead, classical, A-list, leading man part that I\u2019m personally glad he didn\u2019t grow up playing, but am now equally glad that he\u2019s taking at this stage of his career.<\/p>\n

Emmerich, known for making movies<\/a> like Independence Day<\/em>, The Day After Tomorrow<\/em>, and White House Down<\/em>, is writing the script<\/a> with\u00a0Harald Kloser<\/strong> and Spenser Cohen<\/strong>, the two guys who helped him write the atrocious disaster movie 2012<\/em>. Here\u2019s hoping they are able to learn from that film\u2019s mistakes and execute this high concept idea to perfection.<\/p>\n
