\n Despite app<\/a>earing to now have the votes to confirm, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday warned of a brutal Supreme Court confirmation battle to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, saying he expects an \u201cappalling sequel\u201d to the 2018 fight over Justice Brett Kavanaugh\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n

McConnell spoke moments after winning the support of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) to hold a swift pre-election vote, but he took no time to celebrate the strategic coup, which all but guarantees confirmation of President Trump\u2019s pick.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo years ago, a radical movement tried to use unproven accusations to ruin a man\u2019s life because they could not win a vote fair and square. Now they appear to be readying an even more appalling sequel. This time, the target will not just be the presumption of innocence for one American, but our very governing institutions themselves,\u201d McConnell said on the Senate floor.<\/p>\n

Kavanaugh denied allegations during his confirmation proceedings that he fondled and flashed female acquaintances when he was in high school and college. Many Republicans said those accusations lacked corroboration and were suspiciously timed.<\/p>\n

Trump said Monday he\u2019s considering five women to replace the liberal justice, including federal judges Amy Coney Barrett and Barbara Lagoa. Barrett was considered for the nomination given to Kavanaugh and already faced criticism for her religiosity.<\/p>\n

Trump will announce his selection\u00a0Saturday, he tweeted Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

Some Democrats say if Republicans confirm a conservative to replace the liberal feminist icon, they will increase the number of justices if they reclaim the White House and Senate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American people are about to witness an astonishing parade of misrepresentations about the past, misstatements about the present and more threats against our institutions from the same people, the same people who have already been saying for months, well before this, already been saying for a months they want to pack the court,\u201d McConnell (R-Ky.) said on the Senate floor.<\/p>\n

McConnell noted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer\u2019s speech this year on the Supreme Court steps, warning justices, who have lifetime appointments, \u201cyou won\u2019t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Republican leader said, \u201cThere will be time to discuss why senators who appear on the steps of the Supreme Court and personally threaten associate judges if they did not rule a certain way are ill-equipped to give lectures on civics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ginsburg died Friday, giving an unexpected opportunity to shift the ideological balance of the court just a month before the presidential election. Democrats are furiously attempting to convince enough Republican senators to stall until after the election.<\/p>\n

But with Romney\u2019s support for moving forward, Democrats likely are powerless to stop Trump and McConnell from pushing through a conservative.<\/p>\n

Just two Republicans \u2014 Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska \u2014 said they want to delay a vote until after the election. Republicans hold 53 seats and at least 50 senators must vote for the nominee.<\/p>\n

McConnell blocked Judge Merrick Garland\u2019s nomination during President Barack Obama\u2019s final year in office, infuriating Democrats who feel cheated out of their own opportunity to tilt the court\u2019s balance.<\/p>\n

He defended that decision, saying Tuesday that it was \u201cthe historically normal outcome when you have divided government\u201d \u2014 with the most recent occurrence in 1888 \u2014 and that it\u2019s also the norm for the Senate to confirm a justice during an election year if the Senate is controlled by the same party as the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf our Democratic colleagues want to claim they are outraged, they can only be outraged at the plain fact of American history,\u201d McConnell said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
