\n\tIn unwavering commitment to his role in\u00a0L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Nemes\u2019 harrowing competition title\u00a0Moulin<\/em>, up-and-comer\u00a0F\u00e9lix Lefebvre\u00a0slept in the grizzly, mattress-less cell he and co-star\u00a0Gilles Lellouche\u00a0were shooting in \u2014 for a good few nights.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere was bats. I didn\u2019t have any idea what time it was. And I felt like those guys during the Second World War, [who] actually went through it and were having such a hard time,\u201d the young French star tells\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cI just wanted to be the best version of me, as an actor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTo provide some much-needed context, the Hungarian filmmaker returns to the Croisette \u2014 where he picked up the Grand Prix in 2015 for\u00a0Son of Saul<\/em>, the film that would go on to claim him an Oscar \u2014 with the real-life story of French resistance hero\u00a0Jean Moulin\u00a0(played by Lellouche). It follows Moulin\u2019s arrest in June 1943 as he attempted to reunify the forces of the Secret Army, and wound up tortured by the sinister\u00a0Klaus Barbie, head of the Gestapo (Lars Eidinger).<\/p>\n

\n\tTo those unfamiliar with French World War II history, the figure might not even ring any bells. This was not the case for Lefebvre, who grew up studying Moulin. \u201cIt\u2019s in our history class program. We hear everything about him \u2014 he\u2019s this heroic figure, a leader of the resistance in France during the Second World War. It\u2019s one of the things that you learn at school that you actually remember,\u201d the 26-year-old continues, \u201cbecause you hear that this guy went through the worst torture and didn\u2019t say a word. So as a kid, you hear that, and you start thinking, \u2018Well, if I went through a lot of pain, would I be brave?\u2019 I have a very vivid memory of [learning about] this man.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Lefebvre \u2014 whose biggest credit to date,\u00a0Summer of 85<\/em>, landed him a C\u00e9sar Award nomination for most promising actor \u2014 caught wind of Nemes\u2019 project, he went all in. \u201cHe was watching the audition through a screen,\u201d Lefebvre remembers. \u201cIt was this distance between him and I, and it was kind of intimidating. But then I did the first take and went really emotional \u2026 He just stood up and went closer to me and said, \u2018OK, that was good. But that was too much. I think it can be great if you go more interior.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe more they riffed, the more impressed Nemes was. Lefebvre secured the part of Martin, Moulin\u2019s cellmate once captured by the Nazis. \u201c[What is] very interesting about my character is that Jean Moulin, through all the movie, is paranoid with everybody that he meets. He feels like he cannot trust anybody,\u201d the actor explains. \u201cEverybody around him could betray him and put the French\u2019s future in danger. So when he meets me, we are doing these scenes in the prison that kind of feels like a game<\/a> of poker \u2014 where one is trying to understand if the other one is bluffing, working for the enemy, or if he\u2019s on your side.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs aforementioned, Lefebvre took this game of mental poker between Martin and Jean extremely seriously. He camped out on the Budapest set \u2014 re-created to exactly match the cell the pair would have faced off in \u2014 to lose himself in Martin\u2019s headspace, and relished being treated by acclaimed star Lellouche as a peer, not a pupil. \u201cI always love when the great and big actors just start seeing you as a colleague,\u201d he says. \u201cWe were really, really trying to create something together, and trying to find some truth in it together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s actually the star\u2019s third Cannes-bound movie, though one of them,\u00a0Summer of 85<\/em>, was released during the pandemic, so he never made it to the Palais. In 2021, Lefebvre came with the out-of-competition\u00a0Supreme<\/em>, and just three years ago, premiered\u00a0Delphine Deloget\u2019s\u00a0Nothing to Lose<\/em>\u00a0in Un Certain Regard. But\u00a0Moulin<\/em>, his first competition title, is particularly special: \u201cIt\u2019s my first time [doing] the whole red carpet experience for the movie, a few thousand people watching the movie, and I\u2019m going to discover the movie there, too.\u201d (He has not yet seen the finished film.) \u201cIt\u2019s going to be, I think, a very emotional moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt is just one highlight from an extremely busy 2026 for Lefebvre, who has\u00a0L\u00e9opold Kraus\u2019 Microstar <\/em>premiering in June and, later in the year, another movie called\u00a0The Last Patient<\/em>. He considers some of his dream collaborators and\u00a0Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s name swiftly comes up, but so does Aftersun<\/em>\u2018s Charlotte Wells and How to<\/em> Have Sex<\/em>\u00a0director\u00a0Molly Manning Walker. \u201cThose two,\u201d he says with a laugh about Wells and Walker, \u201cwould be the dream directors [that] I feel like I could say, \u2018Hey, nice to meet you,\u2019 at Cannes \u2014 and they would answer me!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore he gets to mingling with European cinema\u2019s hottest auteurs, he must first receive his roses for Moulin<\/em>. It\u2019s no less than he deserves after that particularly method cell stay: \u201cAfter a few nights, I slept so bad that I was like, \u2018OK, I also now need to sleep to be able to do my job\u202fcorrectly.\u2019\u202f\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
