Project PRISMation<\/strong>, the\u00a0original anime<\/a> initiative launched by Japanese streaming service ABEMA<\/strong>, has begun soliciting pilot film proposals from creators across the globe. The move comes after it debuted three pilot animations on its YouTube<\/a> channel in January, and was accompanied by a sequel announcement for one of those previous pilots, Poppin-Play Kitchen<\/em> by\u00a0Thailand\u2019s\u00a0Zemyata<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Project PRISMation says it\u2019s looking for \u201coriginal projects with high \u2018character app<\/a>eal,\u2019 \u2018storytelling potential,\u2019 and \u2018entertainment value\u2019 that show a unique worldview and promise for future commercial expansion\u201d and are roughly five to ten minutes long. It recommends that the proposed works be \u201csomewhat self-contained as a single video work\u201d and is open to the use of \u201cAny technique or software\u2026 including hand-drawn (2D), 3DCG, stop-motion, or live-action compositing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An exception to the latter is AI, which is only allowed as a \u201c\u2018supplementary tool\u2019 for non-creative tasks\u201d like machine translation (and this has to be mentioned in the proposal). AI-generated videos, or pre-production materials like image boards and concept art which are made by AI, won\u2019t be accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the pilot film proposal, entrants will need to submit a \u201cFuture Expansion Plan\u201d to describe their \u201cvision for expanding the project commercially.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Project PRISMation doesn\u2019t require creators to have professional status to apply, but stipulates that entrants have experience \u201cproducing and completing an animation work as a director or in a similar capacity\u201d and the ability to communicate well in Japanese or English. Out of the received proposals, three titles will be selected for funding and other forms of support, such as casting, translating, promotion, and licensing. A release on ABEMA and appearances at film festivals and events are part of the promotion package.<\/span><\/p>\n

Project PRISMation was announced last December and is described as \u201can initiative that supports creators\u2014who release animated works individually or in small, elite teams\u2014by co-creating original anime pilot films.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>On May 17, it hosted PRISMation Film Fes 2026, which featured creator talks and screenings of selected indie animations both old and new, at United Cinemas Toyosu. Among the screened titles were Project PRISMation\u2019s current three pilot films, Makoto Shinkai<\/strong>\u2018s She and Her Cat<\/em>, Shingo Tamagawa<\/strong>\u2018s PUPARIA<\/em><\/a>, Hiroyasu Ishida<\/strong>\u2018s Fumiko\u2019s Confession<\/em>, Akiwashi<\/strong>\u2018s Living In A World Without Magic<\/em>, Tomoki Misato<\/strong>\u2018s My Little Goat<\/em>, Yohei Kameyama<\/strong>\u2018s Milky\u2606Highway<\/em>,\u00a0Shuzuku<\/strong>\u2018s Dreaming of a Whale<\/em>, and\u00a0Ai<\/strong>\u00a0N<\/strong>ina<\/strong>\u2018s LUCA<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

ABEMA\u2019s majority shareholder is CyberAgent, which has animation studios\u00a0Studio Kurm<\/strong>, CA Soa<\/strong>, and CyPic<\/strong>\u00a0under its umbrella.<\/span><\/p>\n
