\n\tWelcome to a different kind of science<\/a> fiction experience! Embark on a journey through six possible future worlds and engage with films, audio stories and soundscapes, installations and projections, costumes and tapestries, movie miniatures and speculative artefacts. This is In Other Worlds<\/em>, an immersive experience created by designer, director, and producer Liam Young (Planet City<\/em>), in collaboration with leading voices from film, TV, literature and science. <\/p>\n

\n\tHosted at London\u2019s Barbican Centre, it features such famous voices as Diego Luna\u00a0(Rogue One<\/em>,\u00a0Andor<\/em>),\u00a0Jeffrey Wright\u00a0(American Fiction<\/em>,\u00a0Casino Royale<\/em>),\u00a0Denise Gough\u00a0(Andor<\/em>), Richard Ayoade\u00a0(The Phoenician Scheme<\/em>,\u00a0The IT Crowd<\/em>), Maxine Peake (I Swear<\/em>,\u00a0Shameless<\/em>), Adam Young (Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power<\/em>), Finnish actress Alma P\u00f6ysti (Fallen Leaves<\/em>) and Australian actress Natasha Wanganeen (Rabbit Proof Fence<\/em>).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe immersive exhibition invites you to explore \u201cimagined futures for our planet, rooted in real technology<\/a> and climate-based possibilities.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tYoung and his collaborators offer a slice of Hollywood through the stories, the famous voices and writers, including Lisa Joy (Westworld<\/em>,\u00a0Fallout<\/em>), and costumes by Ane Crabtree (The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em>,\u00a0The Sopranos<\/em>,\u00a0Westworld<\/em>), among other things. But the immersive experience also wants to go beyond the traditional sci-fi offering.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOur relationship to the future has always been shaped by the medium of imaginary worlds,\u201d Young offered during a press walk-through for In Other Worlds<\/em>, which runs through Sept. 6. \u201cIt\u2019s an extraordinary shared language.\u201d However, \u201cone of the great tragedies of the Hollywood machine is that we often lose that opportunity \u2026 to find deep emotional connections to ideas through these mediums, rather than just create a backdrop for some superhero moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe described In Other Worlds<\/em> as \u201can attempt to create a collection of visions for a hopeful future, but also to bring general<\/a> audiences into direct conversation with some of these ideas about how you might live in the future,\u201d in effect, \u201ccreating an entry point to talk about what the future could be and creating a shared conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPeople walking through the immersive experience will get to see, hear and interact with different potential future worlds, each anchored by a film, developed by Young\u2019s studio in Los Angeles and \u201can amazing group of VFX artists that, when they\u2019re not working on these kinds of projects, is working on Hollywood blockbusters and Marvel movies<\/a>,\u201d Young explained. \u201cSo we\u2019re kind of making an attempt to co-opt that Hollywood machine to tell different kinds of stories, and then out of those films are pulled costumes, props, objects, movie miniature models that go into the making of the film.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tYoung is fascinated by and interested in the history of sci-fi worlds and model making, from Fritz Lang\u2019s Metropolis<\/em> to Ridley Scott\u2019s Blade Runner<\/em>, he shared. \u201cThe unsung heroes of world-building, in many ways, have been model makers,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we\u2019ve done with these worlds is then also invite an amazing collection of collaborators, writers from film and TV, musicians, poets, scientists, and technologists to inhabit each of these worlds and to tell their own stories to find their own characters and to take their own position in these spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFor visitors of In Other Worlds<\/em>, Young hopes to provide inspiration for ways to address our world\u2019s challenges. After all, the creative says, \u201cthe crises that we face are no longer crises of technology, but rather crises of the imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
