\n Melora Hardin, who stars as magazine editor Jacqueline Carlyle in \u201cThe Bold Type,\u201d makes her debut behind the camera in Thursday\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n

Now in its fourth season (Thursdays at 9 p.m.), the Freeform drama follows staffers at fictional women\u2019s magazine Scarlet \u2014 including Jaqueline, writer Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens, \u201cFaking It\u201d), social media<\/a> director Kat Edison (Aisha Dee, \u201cSweet\/Vicious\u201d), and fashion stylist Sutton Brady-Hunter (Meghann Fahy, \u201cBlue Bloods\u201d).<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m also directing a feature-length documentary that I\u2019ve been working on the last four years. So it\u2019s not my first time directing [in general<\/a>]. But it is my first time directing episodic television,\u201d Hardin, 52, tells The Post.<\/p>\n

Hardin has been in showbiz since the 1970s, and she says fans tend to app<\/a>roach her about a variety of roles.<\/p>\n

\u201c[I\u2019m recognized most] for Jan from \u2018The Office\u2019, second to that would be Tammy from \u2018Transparent\u2019 or \u2018The Bold Type,\u2019 they run side by side,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd then there\u2019s been the rare person who recognizes me from when I was Roxy in \u2018Chicago\u2019 on Broadway [in 2008] \u2026 I\u2019ve been in the business for as long as I can remember. I started acting professionally when I was 6 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her current role of Jaqueline Carlyle is partly based on former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, who\u2019s an executive producer on the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not playing Joanna, I\u2019m playing Jaqueline,\u201d says Hardin. \u201cBut there are many things about Joanna\u2019s personality that I do remember and think about when I\u2019m making choices for Jaqueline. Sometimes I\u2019ll even call Joanna and say, \u2018How would you handle this?\u2019 if I know there\u2019s a certain storyline coming up. And just in my personal life, I\u2019m playing the boss at Scarlet in \u2018The Bold Type,\u2019 and [Joanna Coles] actually is my boss \u2014 being that she is an exec producer on the show \u2014 and she also has become a friend. That\u2019s an interesting and wonderful dynamic, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018There\u2019s so much time pressure on episodic television. Everybody was like, \u2018Are you stressed about the time?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Called \u201cSnow Day,\u201d Thursday\u2019s episode sees Sutton struggling to balance her career with her relationship, Kat facing off with a new work rival, and Jane trying to imitate Jaqueline\u2019s leadership style.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful episode,\u201d Hardin says. \u201cI think because I\u2019ve been on the show for as long as I have and working on that set for as long as I have, I have a real knowledge of all the nooks and crannies of that space and of that world of Scarlet. There\u2019s so much time pressure on episodic television. Everybody was like, \u2018Are you stressed about the time?\u2019 But when you\u2019re working with people that you know as well as I know them and like as well as I like everybody \u2014 we have such a wonderful cast and crew in Montreal, where we film \u2018The Bold Type.\u2019 It was really quite fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Further ahead in the season, Hardin teases a rocky road for Jaqueline\u2019s relationship with her husband, Ian (Gildart Jackson, \u201cCastlevania\u201d).<\/p>\n

\u201cJacqueline and Ian are having some challenges, but you\u2019ll see them work through that. I felt that was really important that we get to see a loving marriage where they have lots of history and love and perspective that it takes to really face those [issues] and re-discover one another. So that\u2019s what you\u2019re going to see \u2014 how they as a couple start to prioritize their relationship and heal the places where they\u2019ve become disconnected, and find the ways to reconnect.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
