\n\tColbert\u2019s final Late Show<\/em> episode also marked the end of the franchise launched by former host David Letterman in 1993. Letterman, who himself weighed in on the Late Show<\/em> cancellation, calling it \u201cpure cowardice\u201d on CBS\u2019 part, previously stopped by Colbert\u2019s show as a guest in 2023 in his first time on The Late Show<\/em> since he retired in 2015. During their conversation, they compared notes on their respective experiences hosting the CBS late night program. And Colbert recalled how he\u2019d asked for Letterman\u2019s advice, which led to the current host\u2019s desk being on the other side of the stage, and made a specific request.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI asked if there was a place to hide \u2026 from my producers,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cYou said, \u2018Yes \u2026 it\u2019s great because it\u2019s close enough you can hear the producers calling for you, and they won\u2019t know where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey\u2019ve never found me,\u201d Colbert continued. \u201cBut the secret might be they\u2019re not looking. They might not care if I show up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy problem was I couldn\u2019t hide from anybody, and it shortened my life\u201d Letterman said. \u201cI don\u2019t know about you but I couldn\u2019t leave the building until it was dark \u2014\u00a0and really, really dark. I\u2019d be so embarrassed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLetterman also marveled at how nice the theater, which was renovated before Colbert took over, had become.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLadies and gentlemen, this is television of the future,\u201d Letterman said. \u201cI think it\u2019s delightful. I was in the dressing room \u2014\u00a0and by the way, the dressing room is nicer than the nicest hotel I\u2019ve ever stayed in in my life. I\u2019ll be here through Christmas. \u2026 They have snacks in the dressing room \u2014 and a menu.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve fixed it up a bit,\u201d Colbert said.<\/p>\n

\n\tLetterman, who\u2019s recently lashed out at CBS execs, calling them \u201clying weasels,\u201d for their decision to cancel The Late Show<\/em>, returned a week before Colbert\u2019s final episode aired, where the two threw some set furniture off of the roof and onto the CBS eye logo on the street below.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring the interview segment, Letterman again complimented Colbert\u2019s revamp of the studio, likening it to \u201cthe Bellagio.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI will say, and I have every right to be pissed off, so I\u2019ll pissed off here a little bit, because this theater, you folks wouldn\u2019t be in this theater if it weren\u2019t for me, and Stephen wouldn\u2019t be here if it weren\u2019t for me, and we rebuilt this theater, and then Stephen came in and look at this, it\u2019s like the Bellagio,\u201d Letterman said. \u201cAs we all understand, you can take a man\u2019s show, you can\u2019t take a man\u2019s voice, so that\u2019s the good news<\/a> in this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
