He turns his phone horizontally to take a picture foodie-style. \u201cI\u2019m turning into my mom.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The almost 36-year-old \u2014 whose birthday is less than 24 hours away \u2014 just released his third studio album, <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2ZDgH9uDdjRFNdjEyQCZtH\">IT\u2019S BEEN AWFUL<\/a><\/i>, but he says he isn\u2019t celebrating. Instead, over lunch at Lindens in New York City with his brother, management team, and this writer, he\u2019s reflecting on all of the little steps it took to get here.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Originally, when he was just starting out in Tennessee, he thought he&#8217;d stay behind the scenes. \u201cI got a gang of friends who make music too, I kind of assumed that I would end up doing what he does,&#8221; he says, pointing at his manager. \u201cEverybody knows I\u2019m grateful. While most rappers feel obligated to create braggadocious personas, Rashad\u2019s vulnerability on 2014&#8217;s <i>Cilvia Demo<\/i> and 2016&#8217;s <i>The Sun\u2019s Tirade<\/i> garnered him a close-knit and deeply protective fanbase. That helps explain why, 15 years since his debut, Rashad can still meet his listeners at eye-level, candid and unflinching.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            On his latest release, <i>IT\u2019S BEEN AWFUL<\/i>, Rashad raps about the weight of substance abuse and addiction. I might have just been geeked up.\u201d I realize his music might be a release valve, the way he remains a beacon in real life. Like when he lights up talking about his daughter, and I can see nearly every bit of gold in his mouth. \u201cThis is for my kid. Deadass.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            <i>IT\u2019S BEEN AWFUL<\/i> is a true family affair for Rashad. To the universe, to my creator, to the people that helped me get this shit off the ground.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-280758\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            The Chattanooga rapper is as involved in his brother\u2019s creative career as Tim is in his \u2013 Rashad tells me he\u2019s currently working on curating his brother\u2019s canvas painting work and turning it into a formal art exhibit back home to spotlight local talent. \u201cI\u2019d like to use my little bit of light to shine on other people,\u201d he says softly. \u201cAnd in a dream world we\u2019d get my mom to finally get off like this natural hair moisturizer\/cleanser that she just never expanded outside of our kitchen.&#8221;\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Though these endeavors have little to do with music, they seem like outgrowths of the same creative impulse; Rashad calls himself the ultimate idea man. \u201cI make a bunch of mini-projects all the time,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I take whatever fits best out of all these little ideas I\u2019ve had over weeks and they become an album [&#8230;] I just keep going, trying to build the world.\u201d So for a rapper building a world made up of raw emotion, what genre would explain his life? A few seconds later, almost as if acknowledging his own survival, Rashad pivots. He says he could also see his life as a Black version of <i>Juno.<\/i>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            &#8220;That\u2019s how life feels at some point in time. My imagination runs wild,\u201d he says. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m in a little movie. Is it a romance? Or is it a tragedy? There\u2019s a lot of shit going on.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <i>IT\u2019S BEEN AWFUL<\/i> captures all of those conflicting moods at once, navigating a dystopian present shaped by tech-bro greed and systemic collapse. Even the air feels commodified. I like that kind of shit\u201d \u2013 are laced directly into Rashad\u2019s music. In fact, Rashad tells me Girl In Red&#8217;s bedroom pop song \u201cWe Fell In Love In October\u201d inspired the sonics of Prince-homage \u201cBOY IN RED.\u201d \u201cIt&#8217;s whimsical,\u201d he says of the style. \u201cAnd it makes me feel like springtime.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            He knew \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U2F2Dq8QPIs\">BOY IN RED<\/a>\u201d would be a hit from the jump. \u201cBefore I recorded it, I knew <i>this is going to be great<\/i>. And I was like, <i>I should write more<\/i>. And then I was like, <i>no, I shouldn&#8217;t. Just leave it like this<\/i>. He\u2019d rather go deep about A24 horror film <i>The Green Room<\/i>, cloudbusting, and the creative process behind his latest record. At the restaurant, as we reach the last few of truffle fries now on the plate in front of us, he shifts the subject to the gold in his mouth, which are not temporary grillz but fully replacements for his teeth.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI kind of go back to post-slavery&#8230; it sounds kind of weird, but I link it to that kind of shit where it could be looking kind of like n***er-ish, but it\u2019s not like an <i>I made it<\/i> type of thing,\u201d he says. \u201cIt definitely differentiates on purpose.
