The Toronto singer-songwriter had been working on her new album in Los Angeles, with two singles already out. Her label was planning to drop the 10-song project in the summer \u2013 all Chxrry had to do was pick the third single for the rollout. But none of the options felt right. \u201cThere was just something missing,\u201d she tells me at The FADER offices in early May. \u201cI haven\u2019t told [the listeners] who I am.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            She went back in the studio with her producer Believve and emerged with \u201cMain Character,\u201d a brawny  and slower-moving nocturne with muted 808s and percs thrumming beneath a woozy swirl of synths. It was strong and sexy \u2014 and clearly the right sound for Chxrry\u2019s next album.\u201cI was screaming,like, \u2018This is gonna fuck the city up. I never know anything, but with this one? Recorded entirely at Believve\u2019s home studio in L.A. \u2014 \u201cless than a thousand square feet, me on a chair, him by the computer, every day just going back and forth\u201d \u2014  <i>U, Me &amp; My Ego<\/i>, arriving May 29, blends sultry \u201880s synthpop with the stadium-ready melodies of rage rappers like Travis Scott and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trip<\/a>pie Redd. It\u2019s a huge leap from Chxrry\u2019s 2023 EP <i>Siren<\/i>, which showcased the rising singer\u2019s vocal chops but didn\u2019t feel totally distinct from her R&amp;B competitors. From the lush ambience of \u201cGroupie\u201d to the insistent kick drum propelling \u201cHall of Fame\u201d forward, Believve\u2019s production here covers a startling breadth of ground without sacrificing sonic cohesion. Chxrry tells me the pair recorded hundreds of songs before paring it back to the 10 tracks on the record.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cWe picked the best of each sound we wanted to explore. What&#8217;s the best pop song? What&#8217;s the most amazing ballad we&#8217;ve written? And then storytelling and identity: what\u2019s gonna be the most me? Albums serve different purposes, so I wanted this album to strictly be about identity. Who am I? Her parents\u2019 love language was music, she says, and there are traces of the Arabic musical scale used by Ethiopian musicians in her melodic choices to this day. But despite being raised by music-lovers, and in the same neighborhood as her future-labelhead Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, a career in the industry wasn\u2019t really part of the plan.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            She briefly attended York University as an undecided major before dropping out. Then in 2018, a friend recorded her singing \u201cWork\u201d by Rihanna and Chxrry went viral on Instagram. That led to a label deal with XO Records, which hasn\u2019t been shy about promoting their first female signee: most artists would kill to open for The Weeknd on tour, as Chxrry did in 2024. When it comes to her music, Chxrry says the label has been \u201cextremely supportive\u201d and \u201clenient\u201d when it comes to her development and self-discovery as an artist.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            That includes supporting her decision to ditch her last album and instead chase the sound of <i>U, Me &amp; My Ego<\/i> over the past six months with Believve, who was behind the boards on \u201cWater\u201d by Tyla as well as songs by Usher, LISA, and Shenseea. You have the biggest personality I\u2019ve ever met. You are just unhinged and insane, you\u2019re everything.<\/i>,\u201d she says of their partnership. \u201cI think the magic is that me and Believve wrote and produced [\u201cMain Character\u201d] together in his den in L.A. with a broken mic and no headphones. Across the album\u2019s 10 songs, listeners are never far from having their expectations flipped: \u201cI want them to be like, what the fuck did she just say? What did I just hear?\u201d Cherry laughs. She still delivers more straightforward slow jams (\u201cBoring\u201d) and club tracks (\u201cBadness\u201d might be a Top 5 Cash Cobain song Ever), but <i>U, Me &amp; My Ego<\/i> overwhelmingly sidesteps sonic and lyrical cliche.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cI&#8217;ve always prioritized songwriting. It&#8217;s really hard for me to sing something that somebody else wrote; the most I ever did it was with <i>Siren<\/i>,\u201d says Chxrry. \u201cIt&#8217;s probably why it&#8217;s like my least favorite project, because it sounds like a clusterfuck of different ideas. All very me, but [<i>U, Me &amp; My Ego<\/i>] is the most honest body of work I&#8217;ve had. She\u2019s more interested in the emotions and actions her lovers elicit from her than the men themselves. That allows for her romantic and lovelorn tunes to feel personal and lived-in without relying too heavily on concrete details; instead, their specificity comes from Chxrry\u2019s inner monologue, whether she\u2019s feeling bossy or bashful. On album highlight \u201cBIBLE,\u201d love drives our heroine to idiocy and blasphemy: <i>God could say you\u2019re not the one, if you text me I\u2019ll still come, the way I \/ feel for youuuuu.<\/i>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cWith this project, I was really intent on showing range,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s a lost art, and it\u2019s not the artists\u2019 fault; people just want one thing. They don\u2019t let artists blossom, and it\u2019s a constant thing of \u2018well, who are you?\u2019 And it\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m figuring it out as you are, the fuck?\u2019\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The title of <i>U, Me &amp; My Ego<\/i> bridges the album\u2019s three main topics, she says \u201cWhen I was done writing the songs and breaking everything down, they were either about \u2018you,\u2019 a guy, or \u2018me,\u2019 Lydia, or ego, which is just Chxrry. And I have a really big ego: I think I\u2019m just the best bitch on earth.
