Police have not publicly revealed a motive, and that uncertainty is only adding to the tension surrounding this tragedy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"min-height:120px;width:100%;float:none;\" class=\"lazy-ad-parent\">\n<div id=\"section-6a18c97c73d46-paragraph-slot\" class=\"incontent-ad lazy-ad-slot\" data-base-div-id=\"pb-slot-incontent-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to officials, the violent encounter happened back on May 20 around 2:14 in the afternoon outside Sheron\u2019s Escondido home. Officers responded to reports of an assault already in progress and discovered the elderly victim suffering from devastating injuries. Another bystander who reportedly attempted to intervene was also hurt during the chaos.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities say Butler allegedly fled the scene on foot before police arrived, but officers quickly searched the surrounding neighborhood and located a suspect matching witness descriptions, according to a police statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cUpon arrival, officers located an elderly male suffering from significant injuries. A bystander who intervened during the incident was also injured. Officers learned the suspect had fled the area on foot prior to their arrival.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"min-height:120px;width:100%;float:none;\" class=\"lazy-ad-parent\">\n<div id=\"section-6a18c97c73d49-paragraph-slot\" class=\"incontent-ad lazy-ad-slot\" data-base-div-id=\"pb-slot-incontent-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sheron was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died on Sunday. An autopsy is still pending to officially determine the cause and manner of death.<\/p>\n<p>The accused suspect is currently being held without bail in San Diego County. Before Sheron passed away, Butler had reportedly been booked on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse, battery, and making criminal threats. Prosecutors are now reviewing whether the charges should be upgraded following the victim\u2019s death. His wife, <strong>Maria Garcia<\/strong>, spoke through tears while remembering the man she says dedicated his life to both his country and his faith, telling local news outlets:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI want to remember my husband, you know, how he was [a] very good man, you know, [his] service in the church, service in the army.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, one of Sheron\u2019s close friends revealed that the veteran\u2019s political displays had allegedly been targeted before. Kerry was used to it because he\u2019d come out here with his Trump signs and stuff during the week and flags, and people would drive by and honk and wave, and most of the people are good, but when someone would flip him off, he\u2019d just look at me and say, they have their right to freedom of speech, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A <strong>GoFundMe<\/strong> campaign launched by Sheron\u2019s family has already raised tens of thousands of dollars to help cover funeral expenses.
