On May 25, Detroiters and global techno lovers alike celebrated the legacy of the electronic genre at Movement Festival in downtown Detroit&#8217;s Hart Plaza.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Movement Festival, which celebrated its 20th year in 2026, brought together founding artists like Kevin Saunderson, longtime musical pioneers like Stacey Hotwaxx Hale, and global electronic tastemakers like Nia Archives and Boys Noize all in the same hopping metropolitan plaza. Initially known as Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF), the free event has changed a lot since its first year in 2000. It still is the undeniable heart of the City during the annual weekend festivities, where the city becomes flush with parties at clubs, homes, and bars, in addition to Movement&#8217;s epic programming. It also keeps the spirit of electronic music alive and introduces it to the younger generation. They still have old cats like me around and [help us] garner a fan base. <\/p>\n<p><b>How are you feeling about the future of Detroit Techno at this moment?<\/b><br \/>\n<br \/>I feel the future is very strong. With a lot of the younger generations making music now\u2014it&#8217;s so easy to make techno now with all the software and the new machines coming out. This is the birthplace of techno and it&#8217;s important to always reference the source. What&#8217;s also amazing is that Detroit is on the river, so that frequency is <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing even further and further and further. If you come to the festival, you can be a part of that frequency.<\/p>\n<p><b>How are you feeling about the future of Detroit techno?<\/b><br \/>\n<br \/>The future of techno in the Detroit scene is going to thrive because the young people have adapted to it and they reference it when they are adding new things to it. If you always acknowledge the source, it&#8217;ll take you even further. The young people are going to keep it alive. There&#8217;s a lot of amazing DJs that are blowing up: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/whosjmt\/?hl=en\">JMT<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/zoetalley\/\">Zoe Talley<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/djkillasquid\/\">Killer Squid<\/a> \u2014 just shouting out my young folks that are taking this to the next level. And I&#8217;m hopeful and excited about the future of techno.<\/p>\n<p><b>Can you share a little about the label you&#8217;re starting?<\/b><br \/>\n<br \/>It&#8217;s going to launch on Juneteenth of this year. It&#8217;s called Betty Jean&#8217;s Dream. It&#8217;s dedicated to my mother who is a classically trained pianist and who gave me my foundations of music. She always taught me to exemplify excellence and integrity and hard work in the work that I&#8217;m doing. And so that&#8217;s translating through the music that I&#8217;m releasing on this label. Detroit is in America but it&#8217;s so not American. It&#8217;s really nice to get all these people coming in here celebrating a revolution of dance. <\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019re someone who&#8217;s considered part of this new generation bringing Detroit Techno forward. How are you feeling about the future and longevity of Detroit Techno?<\/b><br \/>\n<br \/>Detroit Techno is the future. I keep making new friends, new family members, and I love it. I&#8217;m DJing and I see a friend that I met when I first arrived or friends from high school or friends from when I started learning how to DJ. For me, Detroit techno is going to outlive us all, which is a blessing. I&#8217;m not worried about it. As long as people really do it from the heart it&#8217;ll always be there. When people start doing it for showmanship of &#8220;look at me, look at me&#8221; \u2014 then that wasn&#8217;t techno to begin with. It was literally from the heart of Black men in Detroit to express themselves when nobody was listening. It&#8217;s got a lot more feelings. It&#8217;s not just banging techno, but we represent the more aggressive side of that. That&#8217;s the aesthetic that we find in our friends and colleagues around the world: we play way more aggressively but also with a lot of soul.<\/p>\n<p>T. Linder: [Detroit Techno Militia play] aggressive, a lot of Detroit stuff still, but it&#8217;s not super melodic stuff . Most of the time people just think Motown. We\u2019re way more than that, not to take anything away from that. But it is 2026. Bringing many different types of music all up under one roof in Detroit is priceless.<\/p>\n<p><b>What sparked your early interest in DJing?<\/b><br \/>\n<br \/>That gets deep into my culture in my young days. I&#8217;ve always been a rebel, so now 40 years later I&#8217;m still a rebel. That&#8217;s how I&#8217;m able to embrace house, techno and all that. My siblings were 10-20 years older than I. They were Motown. They were all that, but they loved music and so they had a wall of albums and they wouldn&#8217;t let me touch them because I was a little kid. So the seed was already planted. I would throw little house parties and charge them 25 cents.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never been Top 40. I am not EDM. I&#8217;m not hip-hop. Sometimes the music in that genre is good and we make a lot of that good music here in Detroit. I&#8217;ve always and will continue to always put my own twist on it, to make it me and to make it be the flavor of other sounds. How do you like playing Detroit?<\/b><br \/>\n<br \/>Nia Archives: It&#8217;s been really great. This might be one of my favorite festivals in America. It&#8217;s my first time at the festival, but the vibes are amazing.<\/p>\n<p>I went to Detroit two years ago. I played in an abandoned hotel and I met some of my homies in Detroit. I love it here. The vibes are just so good.<\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019re a strong force in Jungle, but how does it feel to play here in the birthplace of techno?<\/b><br \/>\n<br \/>I feel really lucky to play here.  I love the crowd. It&#8217;s so mixed. You&#8217;ve got white people, Black people, the girls, the gays. Everybody&#8217;s here having a good time. That&#8217;s my favorite kind of crowd. <\/p>\n<p>Detroit for black people, it&#8217;s the birthplace of techno. Jungle music came from techno. All the stuff that was coming from Detroit, Chicago, it comes from here.
