Hollywood<\/strong> unions and major studios have finally come to an agreement on the safety protocols for film and TV productions hoping to restart amid the ongoing coronavirus<\/strong> (COVID-19) pandemic. After three and a half months of negotiations, the Hollywood coronavirus safety protocols were announced that would allow the industry to safely resume production.<\/p>\n

More than three months after Hollywood unions issued their \u201cSafe Way Forward\u201d guidelines following a June \u201cwhite paper\u201d by the Industry-Wide Labor-Management Safety Committee Task Force, unions and studios have reached a deal on coronavirus safety protocols that will be in place for film and TV productions looking to restart, Variety<\/a> reports. The unions, which include the\u00a0Directors Guild of America<\/strong>, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees<\/strong>, International Brotherhood of Teamsters<\/strong>, Basic Crafts<\/strong>, and\u00a0SAG-AFTRA<\/strong>\u00a0said in a statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cGuiding principles include strictly enforced testing regimens and safety protocols, a zone-based system, and diligent use of personal protective equipment. The new measures will be implemented by\u00a0employers in order to minimize the risk of transmission. To ensure workers\u2019 livelihoods are not\u00a0burdened with added uncertainty during the pandemic, the agreement also includes COVID-19\u00a0sick leave and quarantine pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Added the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers<\/strong> president\u00a0Carol Lombardini:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0are pleased to\u00a0announce that this process today culminated in a science<\/a>-based agreement among the Employers and the multi-union committee\u00a0on return-to-work protocols\u00a0for use\u00a0in the coronavirus era. The hallmark of the agreement makes employee safety paramount, by introducing protocols for\u00a0strict testing, cleaning\u00a0and\u00a0use of protective equipment. As a consequence of the agreement, the studios\u00a0will be making a\u00a0substantial\u00a0investment in testing, redesigned workplaces, COVID-19 sick leave, quarantine pay and other safeguards\u00a0designed to\u00a0facilitate the safe resumption of production and enable the\u00a0industry to recover and grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Key highlights of the protocols include regular mandatory testing for COVID-19 for cast and crew, before the first day of work and over the course of the production, as well as\u00a0implementation of a specialized \u201cZone\u201d system limiting proximity to cast,\u00a0PPE and physical distancing rules. The announcement said:<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven that performers are uniquely vulnerable because they are not able to utilize PPE and physical distancing when cameras are rolling, the agreement requires more frequent testing \u2014 of at least three times a week \u2014 for performers as well as those with whom they come into close contact, referred to as \u2018Zone A.\u2019 All other individuals in the production environment will utilize physical distancing and PPE at all times. Those who work on set, but not when performers are present without PPE (\u201cZone B\u201d), must be tested at a minimum of once a\u00a0week.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

The \u201cZone\u201d system is especially notable considering the production of\u00a0The Batman<\/em> was temporarily halted due to star Robert Pattinson reportedly testing positive for coronavirus. Cast and crew in proximity to Pattinson were forced to quarantine for two weeks. In the aftermath of that, the issue of quarantine pay and sick pay, which was reportedly one of the\u00a0toughest sticking points,<\/a>\u00a0was also resolved, with employees set to receive 10 days of coronavirus paid sick leave.<\/p>\n

This announcement comes after months of negotiations and updates following the app<\/a>ointment of\u00a0Contagion<\/em> director\u00a0Steven Soderbergh in April to head up DGA efforts to develop the protocols. While several productions have restarted overseas, we can probably expect more to follow domestically in the near future with the announcement of these new protocols.<\/p>\n
