\n Ellen just might be feeling the kindness of strangers.<\/p>\n

Following a summer tanked by non-stop accusations<\/a> of a toxic workplace culture that defies her \u201cbe kind\u201d mantra<\/a>, \u201cThe Ellen DeGeneres Show\u201d returned for its 18th season Monday \u2014 with its biggest season premiere since 2016.<\/p>\n

The show posted an overnight Nielsen household rating of 1.9 \u2014 steady with the overall ratings for the fall 2019 premiere \u2014 but it ranked No. 1 in a lucrative ad demo: adults aged 25 to 54, with a 0.9 rating, an increase from last year\u2019s 0.8.<\/p>\n

But even more impressive: \u201cEllen\u201d also topped all<\/em> talk shows in what\u2019s arguably the most-coveted ad demo: Female viewers ages 18 to 34, earning a 0.6, and nailing ages 18 to 49 with a 0.8. The program tied with \u201cThe View\u201d at 1.1 for women viewers ages 25 to 54.<\/p>\n

Was it loyal viewer dedication \u2014 or just morbid curiosity about behind-the-scenes drama after debunked rumors of cancellation and the #RIPEllen Twitter<\/a> trend? Only time will tell if the ratings uptick will stick.<\/p>\n

However, the much-hyped return episode<\/a>, featuring an app<\/a>earance by comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish, did include a mea culpa from the 62-year-old host.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you may have heard this summer, there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show and then there was an investigation. I learned that things happened here that never should\u2019ve happened,\u201d DeGeneres said<\/a>. \u201cI take that very seriously, and I want to say I\u2019m so sorry to the people who were affected.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that she recognized her \u201cposition of privilege and power\u201d and that she takes \u201cresponsibility for what happens at my show.\u201d She also claimed to be more than the \u201cbe kind\u201d persona viewers see on screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe truth is I am that person that you see on TV. I am also a lot of other things,\u201d DeGeneres noted. \u201cSometimes I get sad, I get mad, I get anxious, I get frustrated, I get impatient, and I am working on all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opening monologue, however, was panned<\/a> by some former show workers who didn\u2019t appreciate her attempt at inserting humor. (Reps for the show and\u00a0DeGeneres didn\u2019t return The Post or Page Six\u2019s requests for comment.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she said, \u2018Oh, my summer was great\u2019 and that was supposed to be funny, I thought, \u2018It\u2019s funny that you had a rough summer because everyone was calling out all of the allegations of your toxic work environment and now you\u2019re the one suffering?\u2019\u201d a former employee told BuzzFeed News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Show sources recently told Page Six that the show\u2019s work has changed and that the employees are happy to be back on set. DeGeneres reportedly held check-in Zoom chats with employees and is more \u201cengaged than ever,\u201d sources said. Over the summer, the show got rid of three producers \u2014 Ed Glavin, Kevin Leman and Jonathan Norman \u2014 and elevated DJ Stephen \u201ctWitch\u201d Boss to a co-executive producer slot alongside longtime showrunners Mary Connelly, Andy Lassner and Derek Westervelt.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
