He was 88.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe artist\u2019s publicist confirmed his death in a statement to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/c4gye2zk29zt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BBC News<\/a> on Friday. It read: \u201cThe celebrated British artist David Hockney, one of the most important figures in contemporary art in both the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away peacefully at home on 11 June 2026, one month short of his 89th birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA cause of death was not im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely made available. He is survived by his partner, Jean-Pierre Gon\u00e7alves de Lima.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHockney was indeed one of the most influential figures in the art world, working across paint, photographs, and lithographs. He made a name for himself through the \u201960s and \u201970s, and his trademark swimming pool portraits would turn him into a superstar in Los Angeles, where Hockney would purchase a home in 1964. He was undaunted by modern media and in recent years, even took his talent to the iPad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 2018, one of his 1972 swimming pool paintings, <em>Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)<\/em> \u2014\u00a0a rich piece with popping greens and blues, sunlight glistening on the water \u2014 sold for nearly \u00a370 million ($94m) at a New York City auction, a record for a living artist. \u201cI prefer living in color,\u201d is one of his most oft-quoted sayings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBorn in 1937, the Yorkshireman was raised in Bradford and educated at Wellington Primary School before honing his artistic gift at London\u2019s Royal College of Art. There, Hockney was featured in the exhibition <em>New Contemporaries<\/em>, marking the arrival of British pop art, and his early display of expressionism would draw comparisons to Francis Bacon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHockney had teaching stints at Maidstone College of Art, the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado in the mid-1960s. From 1966 to 1967, he taught at the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of California, Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn moving to Los Angeles, he was inspired to make a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of swimming pools portraits using vibrant, acrylic paint \u2014\u00a0works that would go on to make him a household name \u2014\u00a0and throughout this period he would spread his time between L.A., London and Paris, as well as Yorkshire in the 1990s, to visit his mother. These <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s back home grew more regular as he aged, and would be the inspiration for various pieces, including 2006\u2019s <em>Between Kilham and Langtoft<\/em> and 2011\u2019s <em><em>The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate<\/em><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThey would often depict the scenic countryside. Hockney told <em>The Guardian<\/em> in 2009 about painting in nature: \u201cWhen you really look at nature like I have been doing\u2026. I mean <em>really <\/em>look, then you quickly realize we are just insects, stupid little creatures. And you do get a bit of humility,\u201d he said. \u201cThey chopped down some of the trees I had been drawing. I was angry at first, but you then realize that you have another subject: is it dead, is it not? The wood is always alive \u2014 if you look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThroughout a colorful, celebrated career, Hockney experimented with varying art forms: printmaking, photo-collages, sketching on iPhones and iPads \u2014\u00a0including one iPad sketch that formed the basis of a design for a stained-glass window at Westminster Abbey, in celebration of the late Queen Elizabeth II. In an interview with BBC Click in 2010, Hockney said about working on an iPad: \u201cThe other great new thing in here [\u2026] is the distribution of the image. That is profoundly new. And the fact that I could make a drawing of the sunrise at 6 a.m. and at 7 a.m., send it out to 20 people that very morning and at 8 o\u2019clock they all liked it\u2026. They get a very fresh picture of the sunrise from me two hours earlier. If I had just a pencil and paper by my bedside, the sun wouldn\u2019t be that interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe gave much of his time to stage design, his first foray in this area being <em>Ubu Roi <\/em>at London\u2019s Royal Court Theatre in 1966. Hockney designed opera sets for the prestigious Glyndebourne Festival Opera and even costumes for performances at the Met in New York. This work continued through the \u201980s and well into the \u201990s. In 2017, he was awarded the San Francisco Opera Medal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHockney was featured in over 400 solo exhibitions during his lifetime, such as at the National Portrait Gallery in 2006 and the Royal Academy\u2019s <em>A Bigger Picture<\/em> in 2012, which drew over 600,000 visitors in just three months. <em>A Bigger Picture<\/em> moved to the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain, before it went on to the Ludwig Museum in Cologne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFrom four months in 2017, an exhibition simply titled <em>David Hockney <\/em>was presented\u00a0London\u2019s Tate Britain gallery \u2014 it became the most-visited in the building\u2019s history. On <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of his death, Tate Britain director Alex Farquharson said the institute is \u201cgreatly saddened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cDavid was an endlessly inventive artist, with a unique vision of the world,\u201d he continued. \u201cHe was always completely and courageously himself, both in his work and in life. He taught us about the joy of looking, seeing things the rest of us failed to notice \u2014 his witty and sharp observations a constant presence within his work and in person\u2026 The loss to the art world is immense.\u201d He added that the gallery is working with Hockney\u2019s team to \u201crealize the two projects he was working on for next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA critically acclaimed artist, Hockney was the recipient of hundreds of awards. He even turned down a knighthood, but would later accept one of the most prestigious British honors, the Order of Merit, out of respect for the then-Queen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHockney was staunchly pro-smoking and in 2005, fought to stop the ban on smoking in pubs and restaurants in the U.K. Two years later, at a party held in celebration of his 70th birthday at the Tate, the smoke alarms were turned off for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximately 10 minutes to allow the beloved painter a cigarette. \u201cSmoking calms me down,\u201d said Hockney. \u201cIt\u2019s enjoyable. I don\u2019t want politicians deciding what is exciting in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 2015, he sold his house and studio in Bridlington, Yorkshire, and for a period of time lived in Normandy, France. Hockney returned to London in 2023, and reportedly maintained a daily swimming routine. He had suffered hearing loss through his life, and used hearing aids from as early as the \u201970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTributes in the U.K. and across the art world began pouring in on Friday morning after the news of Hockney\u2019s death. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said Hockney is \u201ca true icon.\u201d Khan described him as \u201ca revolutionary of British art who never stopped reinventing his work\u2026 I know his legacy will live on for centuries to come.\u201d Elsewhere, Piers Morgan said Hockney was \u201cone of Britain\u2019s greatest ever artists.\u201d He wrote on X: \u201cA Yorkshireman to his bootstraps, my neighbour in Kensington (often saw him on local manoeuvres, albeit in a wheelchair more recently) and a wonderful character. Loved his quote: \u2018Laugh a lot, it clears the lungs.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tParis\u2019 Pompidou Centre in Paris \u2014 where Hockney would feature in two major exhibitions \u2014\u00a0said he was \u201cunquestionably one of the major figures of contemporary art.\u201d Art historian Richard Morris wrote on X: \u201cShocked to hear David Hockney has died. His huge achievement was to make serious painting look effortless. He carried forward one of the most sustained investigations into vision, space and representation by any post-war artist.
