\n\tDespite the end of the Peak TV era, Jinny Howe,\u00a0Netflix\u2019s head of U.S. and Canada script<\/a>ed series<\/a>,\u00a0told the Banff World Media<\/a> Festival on Monday that the video streaming giant is privileged to still maintain a steady spend on new original series.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOur volume is not slowing down. We are very fortunate to still be in this growth mindset \u2026 So it\u2019s a real privilege for us to continue to operate at the volumes we\u2019ve been working under. I believe we\u2019re not slowing down. The volume is appropriate,\u201d Howe said during a keynote address in Banff. Netflix is currently spending around $20 billion on new IP, even if a lot of that goes to sports and event programming.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn the drama front, Howe announced Netflix had commissioned a new college hockey romancer, Ice Breaker<\/em>, inspired by Hannah Grace\u2019s novel of the same name. Having joined Netflix in 2018, Howe boarded the video streaming giant as the Peak TV era got underway with overall deals with Ryan Murphy and Shondaland amid a gold rush for content creators and streamers. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was feeling like you were early days on the frontier. It was a different mindset for the business. There wasn\u2019t this fear of failing, the early days of tech and media intersected,\u201d she recalled. Howe helped develop Shondaland\u2019s\u00a0Bridgerton<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Inventing Anna<\/em>\u00a0as well as shows like\u00a0Beef, The Night Agent, The Diplomat<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Untamed<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n\tHowe\u2019s upcoming slate includes a retelling of\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>, the limited series\u00a0The Altruists\u00a0<\/em>starring Julia Garner, and the sports comedy\u00a0The Hawk<\/em>, led by Will Ferrell.\u00a0She talked about upcoming Netflix series having more episodes as a nod to a past when showrunners did 21 or 24 hours per season.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe idea of this deeper, long running engagement is a signature of great TV, whether it\u2019s more episodes, as long as the creativity supports that,\u201d she told Banff delegates. Netflix is also leaning into the creator economy, where producers are coming from YouTube and other online platforms.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think we are right now very creator focused for the most part. And we\u2019re just looking to engage special voices who we think can deliver shows that no one else can,\u201d Howe insisted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
