\n Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the United Kingdom will not abandon Hong Kong if China imposes a harsh national security law and would admit 3 million people from the former British colony.<\/p>\n

\u201cHong Kong succeeds because its people are free,\u201d Johnson wrote in the Times of London news<\/a>paper. \u201cIf China proceeds, this would be in direct conflict with its obligations under the joint declaration, a legally binding treaty registered with the United Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMany people in Hong Kong fear that their way of life \u2013 which China pledged to uphold \u2013 is under threat,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Johnson said he would allow British National Overseas passport-holders in Hong Kong to settle in the United Kingdom and provide them a path to citizenship.<\/p>\n

He said there are about 350,000 holders of the passport in Hong Kong and 2.5 million are eligible.<\/p>\n

Communist China\u2019s parliament rubber-stamped a measure last week that would crack down on secession, sedition, terrorism and foreign meddling in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf China proceeds to justify their fears, then Britain could not in good conscience<\/a> shrug our shoulders and walk away; instead we will honor our obligations and provide an alternative,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

Britain returned Hong Kong to China in 1997 and it was granted autonomy under a \u201cone country, two systems\u201d policy with Beijing. China told the United Kingdom to butt out of its affairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK\u2019s irresponsible remarks and accusations \u2026 have grossly interfered in China\u2019s internal affairs including Hong Kong affairs,\u201d Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said, according to Reuters. \u201cWe advise the UK side to step back from the brink.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unrest in Hong Kong has been ongoing since March 2019 when Beijing considered a now-abandoned measure that would allow criminal suspects in Hong Kong be returned to mainland China for trial.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
