On the same day, the Trump administration paid $765 million to cancel offshore wind leases, deepening the supply gap.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Thursday\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferc.gov\/news-events\/news\/ferc-launches-aggressive-targeted-action-speed-large-load-integration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ordered six major grid operators<\/a>\u00a0to fast-track interconnection requests from data centres and other large electricity users. Under the directive, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved unanimously, grid operators must demonstrate that data centres are \u201cable to connect to the transmission system in a timely and orderly manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data centres will be responsible for paying the costs of their own interconnection. The commission also directed grid operators to consider \u201calternative transmission technologies,\u201d a nod to startups developing solid-state transformers and superconducting transmission lines.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_queue_problem\"><\/span>The queue problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The orders address a bottleneck that has\u00a0frustrated data centre developers and utilities\u00a0across the country. FERC also directed operators to be more accommodating to behind-the-meter power, a configuration that tech companies have increasingly adopted out of desperation.<\/p>\n<p>The urgency traces back to Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who in October warned that delays in data centre grid connections threatened to undermine US competitiveness in AI. Electricity demand from data centres is expected to\u00a0nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le through 2035, and wholesale electricity rates have surged as much as 267 per cent compared with five years ago,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2025-ai-data-centers-electricity-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PJM_under_strain\"><\/span>PJM under strain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>PJM Interconnection, the country\u2019s largest grid operator, has become a cautionary tale. Covering 13 states, it has seen capacity auction prices jump from $28.92 per megawatt-day to $329.17 per megawatt-day in two years, adding an estimated $9.4 billion in costs.<\/p>\n<p>American Electric Power, one of PJM\u2019s major utilities, has openly discussed\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/05\/08\/the-biggest-u-s-power-grid-is-under-strain-from-ai-and-no-one-is-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">withdrawing from the grid operator entirely<\/a>. Federal officials have even proposed breaking PJM into smaller entities to ease the pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Community resistance is mounting in parallel.\u00a0Grassroots groups blocked 75 data centre projects worth $130 billion in the first quarter of 2026 alone, organising around electricity costs, water consumption, and noise.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_supply_gap\"><\/span>The supply gap<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>FERC\u2019s orders addressed how data centres connect to the grid. They did not address where the electricity will come from, a problem that has already forced\u00a0Denmark to pause all new grid connections\u00a0after AI-driven demand overwhelmed its clean power grid.<\/p>\n<p>On the same day, the Trump administration announced it would\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/trump-administration-pay-765-mln-scrap-four-more-offshore-wind-leases-2026-06-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pay $765 million to Invenergy<\/a>\u00a0to cancel four offshore wind leases near California, Maine, and New York. One of the projects would have generated up to 2.4 gigawatts, enough at peak output to power roughly 1.8 million homes.<\/p>\n<p>Invenergy said it would redirect the money toward natural gas plants in the Midwest and geothermal projects in the western United States. The Trump administration has now spent approximately $2.6 billion to scuttle offshore wind developments.<\/p>\n<p>The juxtaposition captures the central tension in US energy policy. Washington is ordering the grid to accommodate data centres faster, while simultaneously paying to dismantle one of the few new sources of large-scale generation that could serve them.<\/p>\n<p>Projects like\u00a0Meta\u2019s $200 billion gas-powered Hyperion campus in Louisiana\u00a0show the scale of demand the grid must absorb.
