\n\tKathy Bates is admitting she initially threw the script<\/a> for The Waterboy<\/em> in the trash because she wasn\u2019t familiar with Adam Sandler yet. <\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a recent video interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em>, the Emmy and Oscar winner recalled the moment she first received the script for the 1998 sports comedy.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI didn\u2019t know who Adam Sandler was and I got a script. It was a football script, and I was like, \u2018Oh, let\u2019s give me a football.\u2019 Twelve pages I read and I thought, \u2018Oh man, I can\u2019t do this thing. This is ridiculous,’\u201d she recounted. \u201cSo, I just tossed it in the waste basket, and my niece, who works with me, saw it and picked it out of the [trash]. She said, \u2018What is this?\u2019 So I said, \u2018It\u2019s a script that some kid Adam Sandler [wrote],\u2019 and she went, \u2018Adam Sandler! You don\u2019t know the Hanukkah song?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHer niece was referring to Sandler\u2019s novelty song, titled \u201cThe Chanukah Song,\u201d which he debuted during his time on Saturday Night Live<\/em> in 1994.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo I took another look at it, and I thought, well, I\u2019ll do this for Linda. Turns out we had the most fun. He\u2019s brilliant. He\u2019s a genius,\u201d Bates said before adding, \u201cI dove in the deep end and just had a great time. Just screwed around. And I loved working with him. That\u2019s when he first started really getting known and people really flocking to see him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn The Waterboy<\/em>, she played Mama Boucher, the overprotective and devoutly Christian mother of Sandler\u2019s Bobby Boucher, a social<\/a>ly awkward water boy.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt seems Bates has made a habit of not finishing scripts, as she also revealed to THR<\/em> that she almost passed on Matlock<\/em> because she didn\u2019t read the entire screenplay for the legal drama.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMatlock<\/em> is a miracle for me,\u201d the actress said. \u201cI had one foot out the door. A film that I did not too long before just was such a heartbreaking disappointment. You know, at my age, I\u2019m going to be 80 in two years, I just thought, this is not working out, it\u2019s not giving me any happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe continued, \u201cThen I got the script for Matlock<\/em>. And at first I was reading, and I was talking to my friend in New York, Billy. I said, \u2018Ah, this is just a procedural.\u2019 He said, \u2018Did you read it? Did you finish it?\u2019 He said, \u2018Read it to the end.\u2019 So, I read and, of course, it\u2019s got this great twist at the end. And I thought, \u2018OK, now we\u2019re talking.\u2019 I wanted it to be about something. I didn\u2019t want it just to be a case of the weak. And the fact that there\u2019s this woman who\u2019s got a real mission and something in the real world that people are struggling with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe series<\/a>, which has been renewed for a third season, follows Bates\u2019 Madeline Matlock as she rejoins the workforce at a prestigious law firm and uses her wily tactics to win cases and expose wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

\n\tBates added that she\u2019s especially grateful for the show because \u201ctimes are hard. A lot of people in this industry are out of work,\u201d and so \u201ca big part of our joy is that we have a place to go every day. We have something wonderful to make.\u201d<\/p>\n
