The facility will initially turn out 200 million chips a year,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aninews.in\/news\/national\/general-news\/pm-modi-to-launch-commercial-production-of-semiconductor-chips-at-osat-plant-in-gujarats-sanand-on-july-420260703223034\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to ANI<\/a>, with plans to scale to 500 million.<\/p>\n<p>The plant is an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test, or OSAT, facility. That covers the packaging and testing end of the chip supply chain rather than fabricating silicon from scratch.<\/p>\n<p>CG Semi is a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.renesas.com\/en\/about\/newsroom\/cg-power-and-industrial-solutions-limited-renesas-and-stars-microelectronics-jointly-build\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">joint venture<\/a>\u00a0between Mumbai-listed CG Power and Industrial Solutions, Japan\u2019s Renesas Electronics, and Thailand\u2019s Stars Microelectronics. The same programme recently pulled in\u00a0Intel and 3DGS for a $3.3bn glass-substrate plant\u00a0in Odisha.<\/p>\n<p>Chips packaged at Sanand will go into cars, scooters, and industrial equipment, with a significant share\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatvnews.com\/news\/india\/india-semiconductor-ecosystem-makes-big-leap-with-rs-7-500-crore-facility-in-gujarat-here-s-why-it-matters-2026-07-04-1047137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">exported to Japan, the US, and Europe<\/a>. The plant is expected to create around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs over the next five years, according to local reports.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Third_plant_off_the_line\"><\/span>Third plant off the line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>CG Semi is not India\u2019s first packaging plant to fire up. Micron\u2019s Sanand facility\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstoday.in\/technology\/story\/microns-sanand-plant-puts-india-on-the-chip-map-but-the-hard-part-begins-now-519149-2026-03-05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">began operations in February<\/a>\u00a0and Kaynes Semicon followed in March.<\/p>\n<p>Six semiconductor projects worth a combined $14.7bn have now been <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved in Gujarat, including ventures from Tata Electronics and Suchi Semicon. Sanand is emerging as the country\u2019s first chip packaging cluster.<\/p>\n<p>At full ramp, CG Semi has said the site could handle 15 million units a day, a peak annual capacity of roughly 4.7 billion chips. It will produce legacy packages such as QFN and QFP alongside advanced FC BGA and FC CSP formats for automotive, consumer, industrial, and 5G customers.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Packaging_first_fabs_later\"><\/span>Packaging first, fabs later<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The launch fits a broader charm offensive. Modi has\u00a0courted tens of billions in AI infrastructure commitments\u00a0from Amazon, Google, and Reliance, and India has joined the US-led\u00a0Pax Silica alliance\u00a0on chip supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Governments everywhere are subsidising local chip capacity, from\u00a0the EU\u2019s flagship fab in Dresden\u00a0to Washington\u2019s CHIPS Act, in an\u00a0escalating global race for tech supremacy. India\u2019s bet is on mastering packaging first and fabrication later.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the inauguration, Modi called semiconductor growth the next phase of \u201cMake in India\u201d and pledged to build out the entire electronics value chain.
