A judge has app<\/a>roved a $1.5 million penalty levied against Elon Musk that will settle a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit despite having \u201csignificant misgivings\u201d about it.<\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge\u00a0Sparkle Sooknanan noted that her court would accept the settlement, Bloomberg reported<\/a> Wednesday, which cited her court opinion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sooknanan\u2019s approval settles a lawsuit filed by the SEC against Musk in early 2025 over how the billionaire handled his takeover of Twitter<\/a>. The lawsuit, which was filed only days before Donald Trump took office, revolved around Musk\u2019s failure to disclose to public investors, in a timely manner, his growing stake in the company in 2022.<\/p>\n

The fact that Musk did not initially disclose his stake \u201cultimately saved him a whopping $150 million,\u201d the SEC argued. <\/p>\n

In May, Musk reached a settlement<\/a> with the SEC that stipulated a trust in Musk\u2019s name would be responsible for paying a $1.5 million penalty without admitting wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Sooknanan previously questioned<\/a> whether Musk was receiving \u201cspecial treatment\u201d from the Trump administration. Musk helped to bankroll Trump\u2019s campaign during the 2024 presidential race.<\/p>\n

In her opinion, Sooknanan noted that her court was \u201climited to evaluating whether the proposed consent judgment meets minimum standards of fairness and reasonableness,\u201d or whether it \u201cmake[s] a mockery of judicial power.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough the Court has significant misgivings about the settlement reached in this case, it cannot say that
the settlement meets that high threshold,\u201d Sooknanan wrote. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
