Charles Oakley (New York Knicks) and Carole Baskin (Tiger King<\/em><\/a>) weren\u2019t the only ones under pressure in the finale moments of Dancing With the Stars<\/em><\/a> last night. While Oakley was the one who was sent packing, Derek Hough<\/a>, new to the ballroom as a regular judge this season, had to deliver his decision as to who he wanted to see saved in a very short amount of time.<\/p>\n

Hough told TV Insider and a small group of reporters after the show that it\u2019s more than a bit challenging when he sees the clock ticking away with only a few seconds left and he needs to render his decision. \u201cCarrie Ann [Inaba] was like, \u2018Let me tell you why [I\u2019m choosing who I\u2019m choosing] and Bruno\u2019s like, \u2018Let me tell you why\u2026\u2019\u201d Hough notes with a good-natured chuckle. \u201cThen, it was, \u2018Derek you have<\/em> to give us an answer!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Hough, who first app<\/a>eared on the show in Season 5, knows the drill. \u201cHey, it\u2019s my job,\u201d he says. \u201cI can\u2019t complain.\u201d Plus, he reveals, to his understanding, he won\u2019t be the one called upon to be a potential tie-breaker each week. \u201cIt\u2019ll trade off,\u201d he muses, adding wryly, \u201cbut I want to thank everyone for leaving it up to me!\u201d<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t so much having to cast the deciding vote, but that he wasn\u2019t able to fully convey on air while he chose to save Baskin over Oakley that caused Hough to lament the show isn\u2019t longer than two hours!<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really was the progress that [Carole] had made,\u201d says Hough, who caught himself being lost in the \u201cbeauty and grace\u201d of Baskin\u2019s Viennese Waltz with partner Pasha Pashkov as to why he chose her. \u201cI had to look at it from that perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Hough was able to talk to Oakley after the show and told him that he genuinely made him happy when he danced. \u201cHe came ready to do the show,\u201d the dance pro turned judge says. \u201cI always appreciate that.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Baskin and Pashkov got the good news<\/a> that they\u2019re making it to week 3, Hough is celebrating his own joy \u2013 the two-time Emmy-winner and six-time mirror ball champion has signed an overall deal to host and develop specials and entertainment programming for the alphabet network.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are already a few projects that are coming up,\u201d he teases. \u201cI felt like it was a right fit with ABC and Disney for things we have in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

What does this mean for Hough\u2019s other dance series that he judges, World of Dance<\/em>, on NBC? \u201cAll the conversations we\u2019ve had have been support and collaborative,\u201d he says, adding, \u201cRight now, I haven\u2019t heard anything from [World of Dance<\/em> yet]. Right now, we\u2019re focused on new adventures.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hough\u2019s in no rush for couples to leave the competition, but he is hoping that soon there\u2019s more air time for him to go into detailed critiques that will ideally help couples deliver more entertaining routines.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are definitely moments where I\u2019d love to say, \u2018Choreographically, try this approach,\u2019\u201d Hough says. \u201cSometimes, that will be said off-screen [but] I genuinely want to help people improve.\u201d<\/p>\n

TV Insider asked Hough if he will be stepping away from the judges table to hit the dance floor himself this season. \u201cYes, there is a plan [for me] to dance,\u201d he reveals. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to work it out, figure it out. Obviously, there are limitations [due to COVID], but I enjoy limitations. They force you to be creative. It\u2019ll be further along [into the season]\u2026when there\u2019s time.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Hough doesn\u2019t bring judge Len Goodman\u2019s endearing grumpiness to his role as the center judge, he does hope that the two have some things in common. \u201cI think that [like Len] I\u2019m fair and honest,\u201d Hough says. \u201cI have decades in ballroom and Latin [dancing], but I also have to be mindful of not using [too technical] terms.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s characters might we seen next week for Disney week? \u201cI feel like it\u2019s all been covered [over the seasons],\u201d he muses. \u201cI\u2019m trying to think of some characters that haven\u2019t been done yet. I\u2019m looking forward to seeing some new characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The performer won\u2019t be surprised to see if Baskin and Pashkov go with another feline-theme given the Tiger King<\/em> star\u2019s first two songs were Eye of the Tiger<\/em> and What\u2019s New Pussycat<\/em>? \u201cYou guys want to put money on Lion King<\/em>?\u201d he grins. \u201cShould we put some bets down?\u201d<\/p>\n
