The French singer, actress, and cultural icon Juliette Gr\u00e9co has died. She was 93. \u201cJuliette Gr\u00e9co died this Wednesday surrounded by her family in the house she loved so much,\u201d her family said in a statement<\/a> to the Associated Press. \u201cHer life was one like no other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gr\u00e9co was born in Montpellier, France, in 1927 and performed chanson fran\u00e7aise, a French lyric-driven genre of popular music. She rose to prominence in post\u2013World War II Paris when she released her first single, \u201cJe Suis Comme Je Suis<\/a>,\u201d in 1951 and put out her debut, Juliette Gr\u00e9co \u2014 Chante Ses Derniers Succ\u00e8s<\/em>, the following year. Gr\u00e9co\u2019s music career spanned seven decades, including famous hits such as \u201cSoul le ciel de Paris\u201d and \u201cParlez-moi d\u2019amour.\u201d<\/p>\n

She met Miles Davis in 1949 when he performed in Paris, and went on to maintain a lifelong relationship with the trumpeter. \u201cWe saw each other regularly until his death,\u201d Gr\u00e9co told The Guardian<\/em> in 1991. She was married to French actors Philippe Lemaire and Michel Piccoli, as well as French pianist G\u00e9rard Jouannest.<\/p>\n

Gr\u00e9co app<\/a>eared in numerous films throughout the \u201950s and \u201960s, including Jean Cocteau\u2019s Orph\u00e9e<\/em> and the 1957 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway\u2019s The Sun Also Rises<\/em>. She was known for her close relationships with other French musicians and philosophers of the era such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Serge Gainsbourg, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, and others.<\/p>\n

Gr\u00e9co continued to record and tour into her eighties. She held a farewell tour in 2015\u2014a year before she suffered a stroke which ended her singing career. In 2016, she was awarded France\u2019s Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters award for her significant contributions to the arts. Gr\u00e9co\u2019s final album, Gr\u00e9co Chante Brel<\/em>, was released in 2014.<\/p>\n
