The 26-year-old electronic popstar talked to The FADER about growing up in San Francisco with an audio engineer father, getting inspired by K-pop, her relationship with fans, and the various eras of her musical career. Speaking on her K-pop inspirations, underscores said in part, \u201cI like the idea of trying to do that without the resources of a multimillion-dollar company. Longtime friend and former roommate umru says he\u2019s watched underscores grow from \u201cthe quietest, most reserved person,\u201d into the star she is today: \u201cI&#8217;ve literally watched her whole character change so much since we&#8217;ve known each other.\u201d  \n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-282443\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<h5 class=\"headline\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"underscoress_dad_makes_music_too%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>\n        underscores\u2019s dad makes music too\u2026<br \/>\n      <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Her father Ryan Downe is a GRAMMY-nominated audio engineer who now works at a tech company specializing in \u201clive spatial audio <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>.\u201d underscores is particularly fond of his prog-rock band Moth Vellum, and says that the version of her dad she heard on wax was nothing like the person she thought she knew. \u201cI never heard him sing in that voice in real life [&#8230;] <i>I was like, I have no idea who this is. This isn&#8217;t my dad. But underscores knows that she had it, \u201csuper good growing up,\u201d and that her father being into music and tech laid the foundation for the music she makes today. \u201cI had, from a young age, computers and instruments just around the house,\u201d she said in part. \u201cI know how much of a leg up I had to get to this point.
