before its release. I was writing her <i>PAPER<\/i> cover story that would introduce the album to the world and only had three days to take it in before the link would expire. I listened ravenously and was as confused by its strange and eclectic sonic choices, as I was charmed by its earnestness. I later announced in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.papermag.com\/camila-cabello-cover\">my story<\/a> that the world, too, would be confounded upon its release, but eventually they would get it. It turned out I was wrong \u2014 at least that year.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The album was presented as a hard pivot for Cabello, and the world didn&#8217;t know what to make of it. A gulf away from her previous radio hits \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HCjNJDNzw8Y\">Havana<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pkh8UtuejGw\">Se\u00f1orita<\/a>,\u201d <i>C,XOXO<\/i> is dense and digitized, its music rooted in her Miami hometown where hip-hop and pop easily interchange with Miami bass, reggaeton, and urbano music. It\u2019s rife with samples \u2014 from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qpn-VhuV3hw\">Ojerime\u2019s &#8220;Give It Up 2 Me&#8221;<\/a> to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2up_Eq6r6Ko&amp;list=RD2up_Eq6r6Ko&amp;start_radio=1\">Pitbull\u2019s \u201cHotel Room Service&#8221;<\/a> \u2014 deployed as literal nods to the sounds that shaped and inspired her. Its lyrics are not neat and overly edited by a team of songwriters, but imagistic and sensorial. For those who only knew Cabello from the radio, it was a lot to take in. \n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-283170\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Camila Cabello - I LUV IT Feat. After its release, Cabello went into semi-hibernation. She didn\u2019t tour the record in the U.S. \u2014 only playing shows abroad. Maybe it was because it came out during the oxygen-suck that was <i>Brat<\/i> and featured not one, but two <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qmj4iFeuEQ0&amp;list=RDQmj4iFeuEQ0&amp;start_radio=1\">Drake<\/a> features during the peak of his ill-fated beef with Kendrick Lamar, but it just felt like the universe was prohibiting the record from breaking through.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-283172\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Two years after its release, however, the tide has seemingly finally turned on the controversial opus. The album has had a sticky way of remaining in the pop conversation. Charli\u2019s <i>Brat<\/i> creative director Terrence O&#8217;Connor has been <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/t\/ZTAbFB6t7\/\">loudly<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1-88X58JA3xgTx-0x18KlLFSc6nBg1GnE?usp=share_link\">revisiting it<\/a>; underscores played \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wRPIQd9zSpo\">B.O.A.T<\/a>\u201d at her FADER cover release party, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/t\/ZTAbFEuoe\/\">video of which<\/a> went viral; every week there seems to be a new viral defense of it on TikTok. In June, when Cabello <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZ5YTPwDj68\/?img_index=3\">shared<\/a> photos of her working with The National\u2019s Aaron Dessner, it sparked a niche but <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/t\/ZTAbYxRUc\/\">active discourse<\/a> expressing concern about her \u201cabandoning\u201d the <i>C,XOXO<\/i> sound. An aspect of the album I found most charming was how it wore its references on its sleeve. She parrots the lyrics of The Dream\u2019s 2007 \u201cShawty Is Da Shit\u201d alongside a sample of the track on \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3lkH7GNm210\">DREAM-GIRLS<\/a>,\u201d and, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wRPIQd9zSpo&amp;list=RDwRPIQd9zSpo&amp;start_radio=1\">B.O.A.T<\/a>.\u201d samples Pitbull\u2019s most famous song \u201cHotel Room Service\u201d as the centerpiece of an emo-esque ballad. At the time, these overt references were taken by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/camila-cabello-cxoxo-album-review\">some critics<\/a> as a sign of artistic insecurity, an overreliance on others to tell her story. But in 2026, there seems to be a deeper acceptance in pop of overt references, taking them in as collage rather than cheap homage.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-283175\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Camila Cabello - B.O.A.T. (Official Visualizer)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wRPIQd9zSpo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-283176\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            I hear that in Ad\u00e9la\u2019s new Billboard-charting ballad \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0ijm2Xui5N8\">Ain\u2019t In LA<\/a>,\u201d whose pitched-down rap sample and chant-like chorus im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely recalls Miley Cyrus\u2019s controversial, but now <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly beloved hip-pop record <i>BANGERZ<\/i>. Meanwhile, Slayyyter\u2019s triumphant album <i>WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA<\/i> hops between moments of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5Ob4E1W3g7o\">EDM screamo<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UwzF9AZGhfY&amp;list=RDUwzF9AZGhfY&amp;start_radio=1\">post-punk<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0W-N1DqpmiM&amp;list=RD0W-N1DqpmiM&amp;start_radio=1\">cool and classic dance pop<\/a>. These highly referential works have not been seen as artistic confusion by the pop public, but as a sign of confidence.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-283177\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AD\u00c9LA - Ain&amp;apos;t In LA\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0ijm2Xui5N8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-283178\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Ultimately what has long harangued Cabello on the internet are calls that she is &#8220;cringe&#8221; \u2014 be it for her viral <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@camilacabello\/video\/7439791590719212831\">cursive singing of \u201cChristmas\u201d<\/a> or her general <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@conspiringmila\/video\/7241884039169396014\">try-hard intensity<\/a>. There was little <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>etite in the culture to accept that Cabello can both be a somewhat pop Rachel Berry, while still also accepting an earnest experimental pop album by her, that has hits and misses, but overall, feels raw and fresh. Now, there appears to be a deeper acceptance of, and reverence for, a certain messiness in pop music. This applies to both subject matter and musical execution in some ways. <i>Brat<\/i>, the undisputed champion of pop in 2024, is <i>about<\/i> the reality of partying, of being a mess, and dealing with it. But there is a handmade eccentricity to its simple beat and a sincerity to the lyrics.
