retrospective of the fashion designer\u2019s work. The joint decision comes after mounting backlash to the exhibit\u2019s announcement over antisemitic and racist remarks the designer made in 2011. Their generosity, humanity and belief in the importance of fashion as art, culture and history \u2013 as well as their understanding of human fragility and the possibility of growth \u2013 will remain with me always.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-283826\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            The decision to cancel the show comes just one day after a front page story in <i>The New York Times<\/i> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/28\/style\/galliano-met-gala-critics.html\">detailing the critical backlash to the exhibit<\/a>, which included donors threatening to rescind and withhold gifts to the New York City institution. The Spanish-British designer, who was born in Gibraltar, is of mixed heritage and well known for his long tenure at Dior and more recently at Maison Margiela.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            His career came to a halt in 2011 following an incident where Galliano, inebriated, was arrested after making antisemitic and anti-Asian remarks at a bar in Paris. Separately, a video of the designer saying \u201cI love Hitler\u201d was published by tabloids. Shortly after, Galliano was dismissed from his position at Dior and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/lifestyle\/galliano-gets-8400-fine-for-anti-semitic-outburst-idUSTRE7872MY\/\">subsequently convicted by a French tribunal for public hate speech<\/a>. At the time Galliano attributed his behavior to his addiction to alcohol, sleeping pills, and tranquilizers.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-283827\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            <br \/>The retrospective exhibition was set to include discussion of these remarks. Officials from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/met-gala-exhibit-john-galliano-c7677f318cdd038b45804a8810ff94ef\">the Metropolitan Museum of Art had reached out to Jewish community leaders<\/a> to discuss Galliano\u2019s repentance and the proposed exhibition prior to its public announcement.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Following his conviction, Galliano attended rehab programs and retreated from the public eye for a couple years before taking on the role of creative director at Maison Margiela in 2014, which he held for 10 years. In 2016, speaking to <i>WWD<\/i>, Galliano <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/designer-luxury\/feature\/john-galliano-recovery-addiction-maison-margiela-10386200\/\">said of the period between his conviction and his appointment at Margiela<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m still making amends. That\u2019s a daily thing to do as well [\u2026] I couldn\u2019t pick up a pencil for four years. The two things just didn\u2019t work. I couldn\u2019t. I hadn\u2019t forgiven myself.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Galliano would have been only the third living designer to be honored with a retrospective at the Costume Institute, after Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo.
