\n Former cast members of\u00a0Keeping Up with the Kardashians have been slated for promoting an app that uses AI\u00a0to alter profile photos so they look like different races.<\/p>\n

Brody Jenner and Scott Disick\u00a0\u2014 as well as influencer\u00a0Danielle Cohn \u2014 recently posted profile photos that were fed through the Gradient\u2019s \u201cAI Face\u201d feature. <\/span><\/p>\n

Disick\u2019s initial tweet showed his face modified to appear that he\u2019s from Europe, Asia, and India.<\/span>\u201cTried new filters in the Gradient app,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWhich one is better?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A raft of critics\u00a0on social media<\/a> accused them of dehumanizing Black people<\/a> and stereotyping entire continents,\u00a0<\/span>while others wondered whether the app\u2018s developers know that India is in Asia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Disick and Jenner have now\u00a0deleted their original tweets<\/a> and replaced them with new posts hashtagged\u00a0#ad but with<\/span>\u00a0comments turned off, while Cohn has kept her video on TikTok<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The duo aren\u2019t the first members of the Kardashian-Jenner clan to promote apps accused of propagating racism.facial recognition<\/p>\n

In 2016, Kylie Jenner used Snapchat\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>\u201cBob Marley\u201d filter to make her look like a Black man with dreadlocks, while in April<\/span>, Kim and Khloe Kardashian advertised Gradient\u2019s \u201cEthnicity Estimate.\u201d<\/a> The feature\u2019s been criticized for equating nationality with ethnicity and using\u00a0flags of countries to represent entire continents or religions. In the case of the Caribbean, the region gets a Jolly Roger flag.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The @gradient_app<\/a> has me fuming<\/p>\n

Equating ethnicity with nationality? The flag of South Africa for the continent? The flag of Israel for Jews? The Jolly Roger for Caribbean? Using facial features to \u201cESTIMATE\u201d ancestry?<\/p>\n

Gradient isn\u2019t the first AI-powered app accused of promoting digital blackface. FaceApp previously had a similar feature, but wisely ditched the filter<\/a> hours after its launch.<\/p>\n

Hopefully, Gradient does the same and sticks to its more harmless features such as finding celebrity lookalikes and turning photos into 15th-century photos. But users should be advised that the app has also sparked previous concerns<\/a>.<\/p>\n
