media<\/a> backlash after it was revealed the artist <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/simonwestgate\/status\/2091844035531129314\">appeared to be following social media accounts featuring minors<\/a> on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">now wtf is by @simonwestgate on X on August 24, 2026, showed accounts that post what <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to be  AI-generated imagery of young boys doing activities like playing soccer or practicing martial arts. Other posts, which had been redacted to hide their contents, appear to show the minors shirtless. The post on X referred to the accounts as  <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/jisho.org\/word\/%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A7%E3%82%BF%E3%82%B3%E3%83%B3#:~:text=Shotacon%E2%80%8B%2C%20sometimes%20shortened%20to%20shota%2C,individual%20with%20such%20an%20attraction.\">&#8220;shotacon,&#8221;<\/a> a Japanese slang word which refers to a genre of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anime<\/a> or manga depicting adolescent males in a sexually suggestive or explicit manner.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            In response to the backlash, Steel has shared the following statement with The FADER:\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            &#8220;A few weeks ago my husband told me people on Rednote were getting into my music, so I went on to take a look and followed a bunch of accounts quickly without paying much attention to what they posted.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <br \/>I was really surprised when a friend sent me screenshots of accounts I followed. I did not realize that a few of the accounts contained highly toxic content, so I deleted my profile. Those accounts don\u2019t reflect my interests in any way.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            I understand the concern, but I can\u2019t help thinking that ageism and homophobia are also factors in the discussion surrounding me.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            I apologize to any of my fans who were upset by this misunderstanding. I need to be more careful on social media. I ask that you have a little grace for an old hippie who doesn\u2019t know his way around the internet.&#8221;\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Steel has had a rapid rise in the indie music scene since the June 29 release of his album <i>MY SKYSCRAPER<\/i> via the indie label ULYSSA. The 69-year old musician, a close collaborator of the late Arthur Russel, spent much of his life <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing around the world, all while writing and releasing music in obscurity. Buoyed by consistent adoration in the music press  (<i>Pitchfork<\/i> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/nirosta-steel-my-skyscraper\/\">awarded<\/a> Steel a 9.0; <i>The FADER<\/i> published a reported feature about how Steel and ULYSSA put the album together), Steel quickly notched major career milestones in just a few short months.
