While so much of modern filmmaking relies on CGI,\u00a0<em>The Mandalorian<\/em> team actually went a little old school here and built a model they could use for filming. They still used a digital version of the ship as well, but it\u2019s still neat to see the show resorting to classic modelmaking methods as well.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Creating_the_Razor_Crest\"><\/span><strong>Creating the Razor Crest<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Inside ILM: Creating the Razor Crest\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8YuaIwVbEZo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->\u201cMiniatures and motion control are in our DNA at ILM, and it\u2019s been over 15 years since we have done a motion-control shoot,\u201d <em>Creating the Razor Crest\u00a0<\/em>director\u00a0<strong>Chris Hawkinson<\/strong> told StarWars.com. \u201cDocumenting the process wouldn\u2019t have been possible without the support of the company and filmmakers.\u201d To create this behind-the-scenes video above, Hawkinson \u201cspent just over two months gathering interviews and shooting behind-the-scenes footage and finished post-production during shelter-in-place.\u201d That included \u201cthe design of the ship, to the engineering the motion-control rig and model mover, to the incredible level of detail in the miniature, to the passion everyone brought to the project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the video reveals,\u00a0<em>Mandalorian\u00a0<\/em>creator <strong>Jon Favreau<\/strong> wanted the Razor Crest to partially resemble an\u00a0A-10 Warthog, and the team used World War II military-style aircraft as their guide while looking for a \u201cGeorge Lucas\/Ralph McQuarrie school of an iconic shape.\u201d While the original plan was to go completely digital, it was eventually decided to create a model that could be used to shoot with. To do so required multiple 3D printers running back-to-back for two weeks straight.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot of talk here about how models and miniatures were ILM\u2019s go-to solution back in the good old days of the 1980s, and while this video also plays plenty of lip service to the digital version of the ship, I will admit that I miss those old days.
