Within two days of the announcement, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> started to emerge that Costco locations in Montreal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/coronavirus-live-updates-quebec-unveils-tough-ad-to-convince-covid-19-skeptics\">were out of toilet paper<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It begs repeating the refrain we heard from manufacturers back in March: Canada\u2019s toilet paper supply is safe. (Not to mention: increased <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s to the toilet are not a common symptom of COVID-19.)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as case counts of the coronavirus rise nationwide, the dreaded second wave of the pandemic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears all but inevitable. In parts of the country, it is under way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some advice\u2014like wearing a mask and practising physical distancing\u2014remains constant. But surely we learned lessons from our hoarding and shelf-rushing during the first wave that could spare us 0frustration and inconvenience during the reprise.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em> reached out to experts to discuss them.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shop_less_shop_better\"><\/span><b>Shop less, shop better<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time in 20 years, the average Canadian is visiting the grocery store no more than once a week, says Sylvain Charlebois, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University in Halifax, who studies food supply and management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Prior to COVID-19, the average was nearly twice a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlebois says staying with that lone trip each week will help keep folks rational and calm,\u00a0while helping keep shelves stocked. \u201cIf you go more than once,\u201d he adds, \u201cyou start buying things you don\u2019t need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Know_whats_in_your_kitchen\"><\/span><b>Know what\u2019s in your kitchen<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March, many Canadians were concerned about stores actually running out of food. There were worries about the supply chain; how safe it was to be out grocery shopping; or whether it was safe to even handle money. (Note: you can use cash. It\u2019s okay.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back then, between the long lines and panic buying, it might have felt like the only things left on shelves were\u00a0limes, frozen pierogies and cauliflower crust pizza.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with less selection in stores, Charlebois says Canadians engaged in full-scale inventory checks in their own pantries and freezers. Some folks even bought a new freezer just to fit more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one needs to panic buy, we\u2019ve all learned that lesson. But Charlebois suggests Canadians keep up with their food inventory management at home. That way, they can \u201cwalk into the grocery store knowing what you need and what you don\u2019t need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Know_thy_supply_chains\"><\/span><strong>Know thy supply chains<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now that many folks have proven they can bake their own bread at home during the first lockdown, it bears repeating that\u00a0supply chains for wheat-based products\u2014like flour or pasta\u2014are fine as long as there is no panic-buying. The country didn\u2019t run out of flour even as some people were suddenly baking <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/bread-erin-socall-1.5625107\">hundreds of loaves of bread<\/a>.\u00a0Not to mention, flour doesn\u2019t keep indefinitely, so there\u2019s no point in stocking up a year\u2019s supply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to run out,\u201d said Tom Steve, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> manager of the Alberta wheat and barley commissions, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/life\/food-and-wine\/article-flour-mills-under-pressure-as-new-home-bakers-take-to-comfort-covid\/\">in an interview<\/a>\u00a0in April\u2014back when the pandemic and railway blockades compounded the problem with delays. \u201cThe reality is we produce so much wheat, there would have to be a catastrophe for us to not have enough to supply the mills.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stay_outside_while_you_can\"><\/span><b>Stay outside while you can<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we\u2019ve learned from the coronavirus over the last nine months, it\u2019s better to be outdoors than indoors. So as the colder weather approaches, says retail consultant Lisa Hutcheson, we can expect a continuation of trends like Canadians buying sporting goods and, well, anything that allows them to stay outside a little longer, such as outdoor heaters for the patio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Will this cause brief <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kamloopsthisweek.com\/canadian-retailers-scramble-to-keep-up-with-surging-demand-for-patio-heaters-1.24204067\">periods of low supply<\/a> for certain items? Maybe, but they\u2019re not the sort of shortages that severely inconvenience others, and the health upsides are clear.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Think_about_Christmas_now_in_September\"><\/span><b>Think about Christmas now, in September<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one should rush the mall like it\u2019s Black Friday, but Hutcheson suggests people start thinking about Christmas and holiday shopping early this year\u2014like, now. \u201cIf you want to avoid lineups.\u201d Even those who order online should think about giving themselves a lot of lead time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNormally at holiday time, people say, \u2018I\u2019ll go to this one mall and try to get as many people [as possible] off my list,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cThink about the way you conduct your shopping so you don\u2019t have to go out many times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hoarding_is_not_frugal%E2%80%94and_may_actually_be_wasteful\"><\/span><b>Hoarding is not frugal\u2014and may actually be wasteful<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folks stockpiling last March as if they wouldn\u2019t be able to go shopping again for a long time led not only to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/provincial\/2020\/04\/27\/premier-doug-fords-anti-profiteering-push-sparks-almost-20000-price-gouging-complaints.html\">price-gouging<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guelphtoday.com\/local-news\/from-fist-fights-to-stealing-off-carts-toilet-paper-frenzy-hits-guelph-9-photos-2161032\">fist-fights<\/a>, but to a lot food going into the trash or compost. Since the pandemic started, food waste is up\u00a0\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.dal.ca\/content\/dam\/dalhousie\/pdf\/sites\/agri-food\/COVID%20Organic%20Food%20Waste%20(September%201).pdf\">about 13.5 per cent<\/a>, according to a study from Dalhousie\u2019s\u00a0Agri-Food Analytics Lab.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will we see a replay of this needless waste and strife during the second wave? Not if we heed the lessons of six months ago, when panic-buying proved to be its own plague\u2014and a perfectly avoidable one at that.
