The cyberpunk future imagined by Shirow Masamune<\/strong>\u2018s The Ghost in the Shell<\/em> is once again serving as the setting for a manga<\/a>. Following the conclusion of the new The Ghost in the Shell <\/em>(Kokaku Kidotai<\/em>) TV anime, September 9 saw the launch of new title Glitch Witch<\/em> on Kodansha\u2019s Young Manga Web, which takes place in the United States around the time that Motoko Kusanagi and Daisuke Aramaki setting up Public Security 9.<\/span><\/p>\n

As The Ghost in the Shell website explains:<\/span><\/p>\n

On April 10, 2029, while Motoko Kusanagi and Aramaki are preparing to establish Public Security Section 9 (commonly known as \u201cGhost in the Shell\u201d), a series<\/a> of incidents erupt across the United States. As the FBI, AI researchers, and the military investigate, they witness a fateful clash: the battle between Project 2501, the \u201cPuppet Master\u201d\u2014with whom Motoko Kusanagi merges at the end of THE GHOST IN THE SHELL\u2014and a Solomon-class AI holding the fate of humanity in its hands!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Masamune is credited with the drafts for Glitch Witch<\/em>, while Naoki Azuma (\u201cR-16\u201d R<\/em>, The Immortal Kamikaze Trooper<\/em>) is the artist. The first chapter, split in two parts, is now up on Young Manga Web<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ghost in the Shell <\/em>manga debuted in the May 1989 issue of Young Magazine Kaizokuban, a special supplement of Kodansha\u2019s seinen magazine Young Magazine, and was later followed by The<\/em> Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>and The Ghost in the Shell<\/em>: Man-Machine Interface<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Ghost in the Shell <\/em>has inspired multiple anime, including Mamoru Oshii<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Ghost in the Shell<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence<\/em>\u00a0movies and\u00a0Kenji Kamiyama<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex<\/em> TV anime, its second season, and movie. After these came the Ghost in the Shell: Arise<\/em>\u00a0films, which have a younger version of Motoko; and the 3DCG\u00a0Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045<\/em>, which is set after\u00a0Stand Alone Complex<\/em>.\u00a0Production I.G\u00a0<\/strong>produced these titles, with\u00a0SOLA DIGITAL ARTS<\/strong>\u00a0assisting for\u00a0SAC_2045<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s The Ghost in the Shell\u00a0<\/em>anime, directed by Mokochan<\/strong>\u00a0(DAN DA DAN<\/em>\u00a0Season 1 assistant director) at\u00a0Science<\/a> SARU<\/strong>, sought to be more faithful to the manga.<\/span><\/p>\n
