\n The creators of the unexpectedly popular multiplayer game<\/a>\u00a0Among Us\u00a0<\/em>today announced that, just a month after announcing it, they\u2019re scrapping a planned sequel. Instead they\u2019re going to pour resources into making their late bloomer into a better game.<\/p>\n

If\u00a0for some reason you haven\u2019t heard about it already,\u00a0Among Us\u00a0<\/em>is a\u00a0party game in which\u00a0imposters attempt to murder crewmates on a spaceship, with the crewmates attempting to identify the\u00a0imposters. If you\u2019ve ever played the\u00a0game\u00a0Werewolf, you\u2019ve got the gist of it. But that\u00a0description doesn\u2019t\u00a0cover the\u00a0social<\/a> intelligence and\u00a0deceptive\u00a0skills it takes to\u00a0play this\u00a0game well \u2014 which is what makes it so interesting to\u00a0play and\u00a0watch.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not kidding about the \u201clate bloomer\u201d part. Among Us was originally released in 2018, to modest acclaim \u2014 but it wasn\u2019t exactly setting the world alight. The developers gamely plugged away at improvements, and it\u00a0\u00a0According to a Kotaku report<\/a>, gamers in South Korea, Brazil, and Mexico discovered the game and quickly spread it throughout their network of friends and streamers. It\u2019s been getting more play on Twitch for a few months now, and is currently the most popular game on the site \u2014 beating out the likes of\u00a0Fall Guys<\/em>,\u00a0Fortnite<\/em>, and\u00a0Warzone<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The developers initially seemed interested in leveraging this newfound interest to make a sequel, but are now walking back on that. According to the developer\u2019s blog, it\u2019s because they wanted to improve the original rather than pour resources into a new game: \u201cThe main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s not to say that the sequel\u2019s content won\u2019t see the light of day: according to developers Inner Sloth<\/a>, all of the content they\u2019d planned to put into the sequel will instead be reworked into Among Us<\/i>. We\u2019ll get a new stage, a friend system, and colorblind support \u2014 because accessibility matters. The developers have also said they\u2019re going to retool the game\u2019s code. They\u2019re also hoping to resolve the game\u2019s server issues.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
