As anyone who watches\u00a0Pretty Little Liars\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>knows, nothing stays buried forever. That includes secrets, bodies, and of course, the show itself. Just three years after the ABC Family\/Freeform teen mystery series<\/a> went off the air, a\u00a0Pretty Little Liars<\/em> reboot is in the works from\u00a0Riverdale<\/em> and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina<\/em>\u00a0creator\u00a0Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa<\/strong>, who is developing a \u201chorror-tinged\u201d take on the series with\u00a0co-executive producer\/writer\u00a0Lindsay Calhoon Bring<\/strong> for HBO Max.<\/p>\n

HBO Max has given a direct-to-series order a\u00a0Pretty Little Liars<\/em> reboot from executive producer and writer\u00a0Aguirre-Sacasa and\u00a0co-executive producer\/writer Bring. The Max Original drama will be titled\u00a0Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin,<\/em><\/strong> and is described as a \u201chorror-tinged\u201d take on the mystery series set in a new town and with a \u201cnew generation of Little Liars.\u201d
\nHere is the descript<\/a>ion of the new reboot:<\/p>\n

Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a group of disparate teen girls \u2014 a brand-new set of Little Liars \u2014 find themselves tormented by an unknown\u00a0A<\/strong>ssailant and made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago\u2026as well as their own<\/em>. In the dark, coming-of-RAGE, horror-tinged drama\u00a0Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin<\/em>, we find ourselves\u00a0miles<\/em>\u00a0away from Rosewood, but within the existing Pretty Little Liars universe \u2014 in a brand new town, with a new generation of Little Liars.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The original series ran for seven seasons on ABC Family\/Freeform and followed a group of friends whose queen bee Alison mysteriously goes missing one night and is presumed dead, only for all of them to begin receiving mysterious blackmail texts from \u201cA\u201d one year later. The series was based on\u00a0Sara Shepard\u2019s bestselling YA novels of the same name, though significantly departed from the books.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll admit that I watched a few episodes of the first season, and can see the appeal \u2014 with its high stakes and high melodrama and,\u00a0Pretty Little Liars<\/em> is\u00a0basically\u00a0Desperate Housewives<\/em> for teens. A horror twist on this does sound intriguing, and considering\u00a0Aguirre-Sacasa and Bring\u2019s success with the very creepy (and very camp)\u00a0Chilling Adventures of Sabrina<\/em>, I could see them giving\u00a0Pretty Little Liars<\/em> a similar treatment.<\/p>\n

Aguirre-Sacasa\u00a0and\u00a0Bring\u00a0said in a statement, \u201cWe\u2019re such huge fans of what I. Marlene King and her iconic cast created, we knew that we had to treat the original series as #CANON and do something different. So we\u2019re leaning into the suspense and horror in this reboot, which hopefully will honor what the fans loved about the hit series, while weaving in new, unexpected elements.\u201d
\nThe series is produced by Aguirre-Sacasa\u2019s\u00a0Muckle Man Productions\u00a0and\u00a0Alloy Entertainment\u00a0(Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries, You<\/em>) in association with\u00a0Warner Bros. Television. Alloy\u2019s\u00a0Leslie Morgenstein\u00a0and\u00a0Gina Girolamo\u00a0are also executive producers of the series.<\/p>\n
