href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/audreyhobert\/?hl=en\">Audrey Hobert<\/a> was thankful to be at the Brooklyn Paramount after a mildly received <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S0bRVFxHfwE\">performance at <i>Jimmy Kimmel<\/i>.<\/a> \u201cThey just kind of sit there,\u201d Hobert demurred about the late-night TV crowd as she stepped onto the stage for night two of three sold-out shows in Brooklyn.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Indeed, her crowd at the Paramount on September 30 was certainly not just sitting there. It took me about 45 minutes to get into the show for unclear reasons and the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@audreyhobertworld\/video\/7691468588301045006\">line snaked<\/a> around three full blocks, resembling a multi-colored lanyard of Gen Z and Millennial pop fans dressed in bright pinks and yellows, and some even in full thematic clown regalia. Once inside, the crowd was faced with a mannequin, a curious decoy prop, on stage before the show began. By the time she released her debut album <i>Who\u2019s the Clown?<\/i> last August, she was well set up to expand the capacity of her big top circus beyond fans of Abrams. She\u2019s since played an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_R_5qaYATh0&amp;list=RD_R_5qaYATh0&amp;start_radio=1&amp;t=419s\">NPR Tiny Desk<\/a>, Gov Ball, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and, yes, three nights at the Brooklyn Paramount.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            At times in the Brooklyn venue, it was hard to hear her vocals as the crowd became a choir. The set wasn\u2019t much more than 30 minutes long, but what it lacked in length it made up for in triumphant and theatrical monologues and prop work. Hobert, whose background is in playwriting and screenplays, has a strong intuition for narrative and momentum. Well over a year after she released her single \u201cBowling Alley,\u201d I\u2019m still struck by the way she constructed a succinct story, built around a bowling party invite, that captures the gutpunch of FOMO, the dread of arrival, and the regret of being of being forced to sit in the company of others. Similarly, the slowgoing \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zOZEyuVBYlA\">Phoebe<\/a>,\u201d which she told the crowd is her \u201cfavorite song to sing,\u201d uses Phoebe from <i>Friends<\/i> to tell a story about getting lost in a TV-binge of the show, morphing into a deeper personal transformation. The lyric that was sung loudest by the crowd that night came from this song:\u201c&#8217;Cause why else would you want me? \/ I think I&#8217;ve got a fucked-up face \/ And that thought used to haunt me \/ &#8216;Til I fell in its sweet embrace \/ Now I don&#8217;t sweat the acne \/ It&#8217;s a bitch, but it goes away.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-284803\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Audrey Hobert - \u2018Phoebe\u2019\u00a0(live for Like A Version)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mIjab7YLo-I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-284804\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Songs pushing self-acceptance have permeated the pop sphere for decades, from Christina Aguilera&#8217;s melodramatic \u201cBeautiful\u201d to Lizzo\u2019s amp-up confidence pop, but Hobert\u2019s take on the form feels especially resonant in an age of ubiquitous Ozempic and absurdist use cases of Facetune. Hobert\u2019s lyrics \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly revolve around the pain and thrill of desire \u2014 are not so much a brazen <i>you got this, girl<\/i> mantra, as they are authentic reflections on gr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ling with insecurity.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            As I stood listening and swaying to the community singalong at Hobert\u2019s show, I realized that a very particular emotional, musical itch was being scratched. In recent years I had a times felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of confessionalist singer-songwriter music being released, much of it firmly inspired by the likes of Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers, both of whose distinct styles have become part of modern pop\u2019s musical DNA (Swift for her musical monologues and Bridgers for her knack for her specificity of detail). Hobert, clearly inspired by and in musical conversation with both, offers her own spin at singer-songwriter pop: one rooted in the rhythms of comedy and plotlines. Each of Hobert\u2019s songs feel like a tight sitcom episode, with tension and resolution. It even has a laugh track in all of us, as Hobert consistently offers up one-liners that beckon guffaws. The music is vulnerable, yes, but it is also reliably entertaining.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Does its crowd-pleasing quality make Hobert the titular clown of her album title, <i>Who\u2019s the Clown?<\/i> Not necessarily. In its relatability and universality, in its in-on-the-joke quality, Hobert\u2019s music renders all of us the clown. It\u2019s not embarrassing, though, to be a jokerster in this universe.
