rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> with exciting new artists we think you should know.<\/i>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Multidisciplinary art collective No.006 can do it all, but HanQiu Huang\u2019s eclectic creative project caught my ear with their September EP <i>001<\/i>, six electronic tracks that seem to metabolize everything from garage and dubstep to ambient and glitch. Sung entirely in Chinese (Mandarin, but also the Chongqing dialect of their hometown) by creative partner Evol (MeiCheng Lu), the energy and attitude of these songs can switch up sharply from track to track, but even at its most off-kilter, <i>001<\/i> is clearly interested in movement, carving rippling grooves out of hulking basslines and diaphanous ear candy.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            No.006 isn\u2019t aiming for mainstream acceptance \u2013 \u201cai.4.ing2q.ang4r.en2r.ang4s.i1sh.i3L.i4zh\u201d is frequently interrupted by a mewling cat, and \u201ci3zh.ong4t.ao4y\u201d opens in a distorted haze of glitchy noise \u2013 but they definitely want their peers to let loose and <i>dance<\/i>. But if we\u2019re talking about something more recent, I\u2019d say it\u2019s a very specific summer activity. Our subway stations are super clean and air-conditioned, so in the summer, a lot of the older locals will go there just to enjoy the free AC. They\u2019ll literally set up inside and play chess or cards. Evol and I actually went and filmed a video with some of them once, and we thought it was so funny. <br \/>I feel like Chongqing has this really specific kind of chill to it. But honestly, every city has its own personality, and I really love Chongqing\u2019s.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Evol:<\/b> Whenever my friends visit Chongqing, I love taking them out for hot pot. After we eat, we just walk around, going up and down all the hills, until eventually we have to start looking for a decent public restroom.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <br \/><b>What was the first album you bought? <\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>HanQiu:<\/b> I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever actually bought an album for myself. I usually just listen to everything online. With the music streaming <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> I use in China, once you pay for a membership, you can basically listen to almost any album.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            But recently, I actually spent a lot of money on albums, 100 copies of my own. We paid a factory to produce them, and I guess that was the first time I ever really spent money on an album. We made them in the form of little cards, with a USB drive inside containing some secret materials we made ourselves.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Evol:<\/b> The first album I ever bought was a Leslie Cheung album. I got it from a record store on my first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to the seaside. I wanted to give it to a boy I had a crush on for his birthday, but we stopped talking before his birthday came around, so I never got to give it to him.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            <br \/><b>What was the last movie you watched? <\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>HanQiu:<\/b> My boyfriend and I have been watching the <i>Ye Wen<\/i> ( Ip Man) movies, and we just finished the entire series hahaha.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            I\u2019ve always liked action movies, but honestly, part of the reason is that my boyfriend and I are long-distance, so we need little things we can do together. And I actually really enjoy this kind of movie. Every time I watch a good popcorn movie, I feel like it smooths out all the wrinkles in my brain. It\u2019s genuinely therapeutic.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Evol:<\/b> <i>In the Mood for Love<\/i>. Maggie Cheung looks so beautiful in her qipao! Even though it\u2019s a love story, it always makes me think about why people are so obsessed with right and wrong, and the relationship between order, sequence, and morality.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-285343\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"No.006 - uang1zh.iao3d. The song started with me literally arguing with my dad and my boyfriend. I was frustrated, and I ended up directing that anger at men. I wasn\u2019t setting out to make a statement about feminism.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            There\u2019s a Chinese slang expression, \u88c5\u903c (<i>zhuang bi<\/i>), which basically means acting cocky, putting on a front, or trying too hard to look cool. The word <i>bi<\/i> is also a vulgar term for female genitalia. During a period when feminist discourse in China was reexamining gendered language, I decided to flip the expression and replace bi with diao, a vulgar term for a penis.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            So the title became \u88c5\u5c4c.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            For me, it was a metaphor rooted in specific experiences. I wasn\u2019t trying to write a song about feminism, although obviously, as someone navigating the world through my own gender, I can\u2019t completely escape those questions.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            I wasn\u2019t approaching gender from a feminist theoretical framework. I was trying to document my life, and honestly, vent about how disappointed I was in the men around me. I hated how much I\u2019d expected from them. Sometimes I wished I had a penis, or that I could just be a man, because I felt like life would be less complicated that way.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The whole song is basically me trying to untangle those contradictory thoughts in real time.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            That\u2019s why, by the end of the song, I arrive at a different perspective. Some people have criticized the lyrics for being too messy or structurally all over the place, but that messiness is part of the process. Eventually, I started to realize that men have their own problems and their own struggles, too.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            There\u2019s a line where I say, \u201c\u6709\u5c4c\u7684\u4eba\u90fd\u662f\u8ba8\u597d\u578b\u4eba\u683c,\u201d which roughly translates to \u201cEveryone with a dick is a people-pleaser.\u201d I\u2019m talking about how people, whether in their sex lives or everyday social interactions, often do things to meet society\u2019s expectations. That\u2019s something we all share as human beings living within a social system.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Earlier in the song, I say, \u201c\u6211\u88c5\u903c\u8fd8\u597d\u6211\u6709\u201d &#8211; roughly, \u201cAt least when I act like a badass, I actually have one.\u201d But by the end, I say, \u201c\u6211\u4e0d\u88c5\u4e86\u201d &#8211; \u201cI\u2019m done pretending.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            To me, a lot of the problems we associate with gender actually come from the policies, ideologies, and systems of social organization behind them, rather than from gender itself.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            My album <i>001<\/i> is essentially a record of my thought process. It\u2019s more like a series of sketches than an academic paper, which is one of the biggest differences between <i>001<\/i> and <i>003<\/i>. But if we\u2019re talking about the lyrics people are most likely to misunderstand, I\u2019d say this is definitely the one.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Evol:<\/b> I actually quite like being misunderstood. I don\u2019t think everyone needs to understand my lyrics the way I do. At least they\u2019ve read them and thought about something. I think you can hear it in the music we make. I\u2019m not really making songs just to make them sound good. I\u2019m trying to document a specific feeling or emotional state at a particular moment. Once Evol has sung a song and we both feel like it works, that\u2019s usually it. It was the very first piece I made for No.006.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            When I first started the project, I wasn\u2019t even planning to make music. I wanted to turn the ID badge itself into an artwork &#8211; something affordable that people could actually buy and use in their everyday lives.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            I pitched the idea to a few musicians in China because I love music culture, and I thought their fans would be open-minded enough to find it interesting. None of them responded, and I got so mad about it that I started making music myself. Like, fine, if you won&#8217;t pay attention to me, I&#8217;ll just become a musician myself hahaha.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The text on the badge is a coded version of \u201c\u5e7f\u544a\u4f4d\u62db\u79df,\u201d which means \u201cadvertising space<br \/>available for rent,\u201d written in my own cipher language, Qiu Yu (Qiu Language).\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            I love this badge because wearing it feels like an identity marker. It means I\u2019m an agent of No.006. <br \/>And there\u2019s something I love about ID badges in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>: they\u2019re such an ordinary-person object. Think about spies. A real spy has to look exactly like everyone else. What makes them different is that they have a different mission and a different perspective. Qiu and I got matching little red hearts on the insides of our lips when we were younger. The way they put it was that nobody would ever actually encounter my work, and I\u2019d eventually end up talking to myself in some tiny little corner of the world.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Music, on the other hand, reaches people differently. Not everyone goes to an art museum, but pretty much everyone listens to music. We held a runway show in a bar, and everyone involved put so much passion into that night. The whole experience moved me so much that I cried for a long time afterward.
