That can be heard clearly on his 2022 EP <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Lr-_S6GtHwU&amp;list=OLAK5uy_nsRBzdbYyb4R0XijMO3-oqtgNlZTYP7lg\">Maltman and Effie<\/a><\/i>, six tracks of rambunctious, ornately composed chamber pop. It was a feat that could have marked a new chapter of pop ambition, but following its release, Flanagan changed his artist name from KALI (letting go of a healthy and steady listenership on Spotify which still sits above 200 K) and relocated to New York City. Alongside his cross-country move, he was transitioning \u2014 a process he documented on 2024\u2019s <i>Tow Truck Jesus<\/i>, his first full-length project released under the new moniker Superfan. That album was recorded chronologically and thus the album tracked his voice\u2019s transformation as he underwent hormone therapy. On it, he <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X5vocHpnPxw\">sang<\/a> about the changes h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening to his body in unflinching terms, but  the project is still bolstered with a poeticism that added new depth to his granular, lyrical diarism.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cI am male-presenting and feel secure in that for the first time in my life,\u201d Flanagan says. \u201cThat self-security opened the doors to being able to be receptive to the world in a different way.\u201d Now, he has the spiritual bandwidth to train his musical eye on more universal themes. Cue <i>My Piledriver Heart<\/i>, released October 16 via AD 93, an album which finds Flanagan digging his heels into a new, murkier art rock sound and documenting young adulthood with a cinematic and roaming disposition.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            He recorded it with cellist <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/oshmeek\/\">Omeed Almassi<\/a> (now a part of the band) and producer\/engineer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/socialmediasupersoldier\/?hl=en\">Hudson Pollock<\/a> in a rehearsal space beneath the Manhattan restaurant Indochine. For this album, Flanagan was keen on exploring the harmonic resonance between the cello and his low, drop-tuned guitar. Prior to this record, Flanagan approached recording albums with the idea that it should sound like \u201cclones\u201d of his had made it. On songs like \u201cJason Powers of The Underminer,\u201d layers of Flanagan\u2019s rumbling acoustic guitar chug like a train as Almassi\u2019s glissandos surround the periphery. It evokes the tension he felt as he settled more into himself post-transition while still feeling torn asunder by a &#8220;tumultuous&#8221; off-and-on-again relationship. \u201cYou&#8217;re holding onto something and also trying to let go at the same time,\u201d he says of the relationship. \u201cThat kind of friction creates this ever-present melancholy which is something I was really insistent upon creating sonically and musically on every single song.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The album is coming out at a busy time for Flanagan as he expands his world of collaborators. He is the bassist in the rising New York City emo band Holidays in United States, who released their newest full-length <i>How to Count to Five<\/i> on October 5.
