\n Election watch: Mail-In Undercuts Democracy<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDemocracy is in danger, but the threat is not coming from Donald Trump,\u201d declares Daniel McCarthy at Spectator USA<\/a>. Democrats\u2019 push for mail-in voting is a \u201crevolution in the very idea of what an election is.\u201d Rather than \u201ctaking place in a specific location on a specific day, an election becomes more of a virtual event,\u201d with Americans voting from anywhere at any time, though \u201cnews<\/a> may break, voters may die, candidates themselves may die or drop out of the race.\u201d An election \u201cceases to be an election\u201d and \u201cbecomes an ongoing survey of public opinion.\u201d In the balloting booth, voters are \u201cfree from the influence of outside opinion\u201d; there is \u201cno campaigning,\u201d \u201cno television blaring out news with a partisan slant\u201d and no one \u201cto pressure the voter.\u201d These \u201cprotections for conscience<\/a>\u201d effectively disapp<\/a>ear with mail-in voting.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor those who feel as if the coronavirus crisis is never going away,\u201d the editors of Issues & Insights<\/a> \u201coffer some optimism.\u201d The virus is here to stay, yes, but a sharp drop in excess deaths shows it \u201cisn\u2019t the threat it was when deaths spiked in the middle of April.\u201d Other good news: \u201cWhen compared to Europe, South America, its closest neighbors, other developed nations and the world, the US\u2019 case fatality rate is among the lowest.\u201d Expect Democrats to \u201cignore facts\u201d that show improvement, since \u201cthey want to voters to live in fear\u201d through November. But if \u201cthe media<\/a> do the same,\u201d it shows they\u2019ve \u201cbecome the Democratic Party\u2019s communications and propaganda office.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Everson Museum of Art, in Syracuse, NY, plans to use the proceeds for a \u201cpolitically attractive reason\u201d \u2014 to acquire works by women and minorities. That might be an admirable goal, \u201cbut to seek to diversify the Everson by selling off the jewel of its collection flies in the face of a fundamental tenet of museum governance\u201d: \u201cIn return for its special tax status and similar privileges, it is expected\u201d to preserve important pieces for Americans, not let them go into private ownership, \u201cnever again [to] be seen by the public.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tech beat: Censoring COVID News From China<\/strong><\/p>\n

Big Tech reacted rapidly to Chinese virologist Dr. Li-Meng Yan\u2019s claims that the Chinese Communist Party designed and intentionally released the virus to the world, Lee Smith notes at Tablet magazine<\/a>: Twitter suspended her account, while Facebook and Instagram added warnings to videos of her interview. Yan\u2019s charges seem \u00ad\u201cimpossible to ever prove,\u201d yet \u201cChina\u2019s public actions\u201d certainly sow doubt, and \u201cthe CCP has never given straight answers about the origins of the pandemic\u201d and \u201cwaged an active disinformation campaign about the origins and effects of the virus.\u201d Meanwhile, YouTube and others have blocked even medical experts, including \u201cthe head of epidemiology at Rockefeller University,\u201d for questioning the lockdowns. This isn\u2019t stopping \u201cmisinformation,\u201d it\u2019s protecting \u201ca political narrative\u201d \u2014 one that happens to serve both China\u2019s rulers and America\u2019s elite \u201cChina class,\u201d which profits from doing business with Beijing.<\/p>\n

Space race: A Great Place to Visit \u2013 on the Moon<\/strong><\/p>\n

NASA has hinted that it may not be able to land at the moon\u2019s South Pole as planned during a trip<\/a> there in 2024, but Mark Whittington at the Washington Examiner<\/a> offers another site: Tycho, a crater that is one of the lunar satellite\u2019s most \u201cscientifically interesting\u201d features. The site contains \u201cboulders and melted material\u201d formed during \u201cthe original \u00adimpact\u201d that created the crater. Samples would \u201cadvance our understanding of lunar science considerably.\u201d Of course, \u201cany voyage of discovery to the moon,\u201d whether to the South Pole or \u201ca place such as Tycho, would be a balm for a world wracked by pandemic and civil strife. The whole planet could look up and know that humans are still capable of great things.\u201d<\/p>\n
