Barrett is a devout Roman Catholic and a member of an ecumenical charismatic community, so naturally, Democrats and their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> allies are trying to cast her as Dangerous Theocrat.<\/p>\n<p>But the least they can do is get the facts right. Sadly, it seems that\u2019s too much to ask. Witness Villanova professor Massimo Faggioli\u2019s flatulent hit piece <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2020\/09\/24\/supreme-courtreligious-beliefs-420863\">published at Politico Thursday<\/a>. Faggioli charges Barrett with membership in a \u201cChristian group with a highly authoritarian internal structure.\u201d This, he argues, means interrogating her religious faith is within bounds in a potential confirmation battle.<\/p>\n<p>Never mind that the US Constitution bars such interrogation (\u201cno religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States\u201d). It\u2019s harder still to take Faggioli seriously when he makes three basic factual errors in a short piece.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"First_error_Barretts_%E2%80%9Ccommunity_covenant%E2%80%9D_is_no_secret\"><\/span><strong>First error: Barrett\u2019s \u201ccommunity covenant\u201d is no secret<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Faggioli wants the Senate to \u201cexamine any covenant \u2014 a solemn contract binding before God \u2014 that she signed in the course of becoming a full member of People of Praise,\u201d the charismatic community to which she belongs. \u201cWhat is its nature and scope? What are the consequences of violating it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Actually, senators won\u2019t need to go sleuthing in dusty Vatican archives \u2014 because they can find the PoP\u2019s \u201cCommunity Covenant\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/peopleofpraise.org\/news\/?p=6232\">with a simple Google search<\/a>. And it\u2019s about as anodyne as you\u2019d expect the vows of an ecumenical group devoted to living wholesome, godly lives to be: \u201cWe commit ourselves to live our lives in true righteousness and holiness. All of our lives must be worthy of the calling to which we have been called,\u201d etc. etc.<\/p>\n<p>Charismatic Christianity \u2014 arm-swaying and \u201cworship songs\u201d \u2014 isn\u2019t most Catholics\u2019 cup of tea. But this isn\u2019t some nefarious vow, signed in blood, pledging PoP members to infiltrate the US government and enact a real-life version of \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Second_error_Opus_Dei_members_dont_take_vows\"><\/span><strong>Second error: Opus Dei members don\u2019t take vows<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Comparing PoP disfavorably with Opus Dei, another Catholic order that haunts liberal imaginations, Faggioli writes: \u201cSome people might understandably balk at having a member of a religious order or Opus Dei sit on the Supreme Court. But at least in these communities, the vow of obedience that such a person has made would be visible, formal and accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Actually, Opus Dei members don\u2019t profess any vows at all. As the group\u2019s US Web site states, \u201cOpus Dei faithful are lay people. For this reason, they do not profess vows because they are not consecrated persons as in the case of members of a religious order.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Third_error_Pope_Francis_doesnt_disdain_Barretts_group\"><\/span><strong>Third error: Pope Francis doesn\u2019t disdain Barrett\u2019s group<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Finally, Faggioli tries to paint PoP as somehow a renegade Catholic order, disdained by the pope. \u201cThe Catholic Church\u2019s official stance toward these new Catholic movements and communities is instructive,\u201d Faggioli says, citing Pope Francis\u2019 2014 warning for church communities, like PoP, not to \u201cusurp the individual freedom\u201d of members.<\/p>\n<p>The pope\u2019s warning, of course, is a valid one. But it applies not just to Barrett\u2019s community but to any group within the Catholic Church. It also applies to groups outside the church. But it\u2019s misleading to suggest that Pope Francis somehow holds PoP in odium. He emphatically doesn\u2019t.
