\n Public Enemy is still ready to \u201cFight the Power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thirty-one years after that classic track dropped, the legendary Long Island posse returns Friday with a new LP, \u201cWhat You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down?\u201d It marks the group\u2019s return to Def Jam, the iconic hip-hop label that they helped build, and features \u201cFight the Power: Remix 2020,\u201d an all-star update of the 1989 anthem.<\/p>\n

The Post spoke to PE leader Chuck D, 60, shortly after Wednesday\u2019s controversial Breonna Taylor decision. Here, he sounds off on being an \u201cOG\u201d in the Black Lives Matter movement, why \u201cFight the Power\u201d is still relevant and getting the surviving Beastie Boys to record again.<\/p>\n

How does it feel that \u201cFight the Power\u201d is still so relevant, maybe even more so, 31 years later?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The bones of the song are supposed to carry it through decades, and [it doesn\u2019t] have to be currently popular to be relevant. Philosophically, people come to me and say, \u201cAren\u2019t you a little dismayed that not a lot has changed since \u201989?\u201d \u2026 It still smells the same odor. This is why a song could make you think.<\/p>\n

When the Black Lives Matter movement intensified this year, what did you think about Public Enemy\u2019s responsibility to be a voice?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your OG status shouldn\u2019t overshadow the movement of young energy. I believe young energy is leadership. I believe old energy is counsel and advice and direction \u2026 Based on the atrocities and exposure of what happ<\/a>ened to George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and so on \u2014 especially with [Wednesday\u2019s] decision \u2014 it was a reachable moment and a teachable moment. When you have a side that basically blatantly says that you don\u2019t matter, that\u2019s just spreading hatred, man.<\/p>\n

You take aim at Trump on \u201cState of the Union (STFU).\u201d Is it safe to say Biden\u2019s got your vote?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the side that you\u2019re on versus the side that hates you. There\u2019s no time for microscopic differences, man.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great moment on the new album when you rock with Mike D and Ad-Rock, from the Beastie Boys, and Run-DMC on \u201cPublic Enemy Number Won\u201d as middle-aged rappers now.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a moment, man. It wasn\u2019t easy, because the Beastie Boys have a pact that they\u2019re not gonna be rhyming again [after Adam \u201cMCA\u201d Yauch\u2019s death in 2012]. And what they were able to give to that song, to me, was just amazing \u2026 Run-DMC, Jam Master Jay, Ad-Rock, Mike D and MCA, they had brought me into the Def Jam thing. We\u2019ve come full circle to do \u201cPublic Enemy Number Won.\u201d It was the perfect 60th birthday present.<\/p>\n

All of you guys came up during this golden era in the New York rap scene. What was in the air that made it so special?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The thing that made it so special is nobody knew what was next. And you did it scraping and carving at the future [with] what your claws could bear, you know? And that was the joy. There\u2019s a beauty in clawing, scratching for the future, for the love of it.<\/p>\n

What do you think about the state of today\u2019s New York rap scene?<\/strong><\/p>\n

New York\u2019s rap scene is always evolving; it\u2019s cool \u2026 New York City \u2014 and the surrounding metropolitan area \u2014 knows rap music, and they\u2019re not just gonna accept any ol\u2019 anything because it\u2019s popular across whatever.<\/p>\n

How do you feel about being an elder statesman in the game<\/a> now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like with golf, I\u2019m part of the senior circuit \u2026 We do our own thing in our own way.<\/p>\n

What did you do to celebrate your 60th birthday last month?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I celebrated with close fam in silence. I like to listen more than talk. And it\u2019s good to be silent more than run my mouth.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
