Back in 2017, then Councilmember Bottoms misused $40,000 in taxpayer funds to send out campaign fliers (she was ultimately fined $37,000 for the campaign finance violation), and her biggest win for “public safety” was the establishment of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center last year, a sprawling, 85-acre training facility for the Atlanta Police department, colloquially known as “Cop City.”

Cop City has been a major flashpoint between progressive voters and Governor-elect Bottoms. The $67 million dollar facility necessitated major deforestation in Georgia, and an environmental activist Tortuguita was killed by Georgia State Patrol during 2023 protests against the construction plan. That’s on top of what critics see as a feedback loop where police brutality leads to more money for cops in the name of “training.” Despite the massive cost to taxpayers and sustained public criticism, including an extensive push for a ballot referendum, voters were never allowed to seriously weigh in on the proposed training center.

Deb Haaland, Governor of New Mexico

Key policy issues: Environmental protection, clean energy transitions, and federal advocacy for Indigenous communities.

The former U.S. Secretary of the Interior and Representative in U.S. Congress became the first Native American woman elected governor of a U.S. state.
