artists. But it\u2019s rare for the details of those contracts to become public knowledge. Today, <i>New York Times<\/i> gave K-pop fans <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/11\/05\/world\/asia\/kpop-newjeans-contract.html\">an unprecedented look into the wide-ranging terms of NewJeans\u2019s label deal with HYBE subsidiary ADOR<\/a>, which not only dictates the girl group\u2019s musical output and the use of their voices and likenesses, but the minutiae of their personal lives.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The contracts, which NewJeans\u2019s parents signed when they were teenagers, are \u201cunusually aggressive,\u201d per an entertainment lawyer based in Seoul. Terms include restrictions on their personal romantic relationships and how the group is allowed to speak about their label in public. The contracts also did away with template language protecting the artists\u2019 \u201crights to physical and mental health,\u201d making it more difficult for the group to argue against their working conditions.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-285863\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Crucially, the contracts also include steep exit fees should the artists attempt to leave the company, or even if the company decides to drop an artist. Experts told the <i>Times<\/i> that the financial terms of the contract were not particularly unusual for the K-pop industry, though entertainment lawyer Dina LaPolt (Britney Spears, Cardi B) said the deal would seem \u201chorrific\u201d to U.S. artists.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Representatives for HYBE defended those exit penalties to the <i>Times<\/i> on the basis of the company\u2019s high financial investment in the group\u2019s training and careers. The terms of the contract also allow for the company to continue using the group\u2019s voices and likenesses long after the deal itself winds down in 2029, though members will have to be paid. Sources close to NewJeans also say ADOR suggested several members of the girl group undergo cosmetic surgery, increasing their \u201ctrainee debt.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            NewJeans shocked the K-pop industry in 2024 when the girl group called an emergency press conference announcing their intent to leave ADOR.
