“#Flynn prosecution had ‘get Trump’ vibe<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n An FBI official who worked on former Special Counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election believed some investigators had a \u201cget Trump\u201d attitude and that the probe was a \u201cdead end,\u201d according to a report.<\/p>\n

FBI agent William Barnett slammed the Trump-Russia collusion inquiry as \u201copaque\u201d and described it as having little detail concerning specific of criminal events during an interview last week at the Justice Department, according to Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The network obtained the 302, an FBI interview memo done as part of an investigation, in which Barnett described himself to US Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri Jeffrey Jensen as taking serious issue with the \u201cpredication\u201d of the investigation into then-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.<\/p>\n

Barnett told Jensen that he believed the \u201cpredication\u201d into Flynn\u2019s probe was \u201cnot great\u201d because it \u201cwas not clear\u201d what the \u201cpersons opening the case wanted to \u2018look for or at.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Six weeks into the investigation, Barnett was \u201cstill unsure of the basis of the investigation concerning Russia and the Trump campaign working together, without a specific criminal allegation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FBI agent told investigators that he then began asking others in the bureau what \u201cthe end game<\/a>\u201d was in the Flynn investigation.<\/p>\n

After suggesting that they interview the incoming national security adviser \u201cand the case be closed unless derogatory information was obtained,\u201d he claimed was \u201ccautioned against\u201d doing so over concerns that it would \u201calert Flynn as to the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barnett disagreed, according to the 302, telling investigators he believed Flynn\u2019s position as an incoming Trump administration official \u201coffered an opportunity for the FBI to conduct the interview without alerting any suspicion and Flynn would see such an interview as being standard procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barnett\u2019s requests to interview the soon-to-be national security adviser were denied, and the investigation was described as \u201ctop down,\u201d meaning that \u201cdirection concerning the investigation was coming from senior officials.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FBI agent believed that then-deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe was the one running the show.<\/p>\n

While he believed that Flynn was an \u201coutlier,\u201d in the investigation, Barnett said he did believe there were grounds to probe \u201cthe other three subjects in Crossfire Hurricane.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his concerns that the investigation was \u201cproblematic and could result in an inspector general<\/a> investigation,\u201d he continued the work he was ordered to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cBarnett still did not see any evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. Barnett was willing to follow any instructions being given by the deputy director as long as it was not a violation of the law,\u201d the interview memo said.<\/p>\n

According to Barnett, the app<\/a>ointment of a special counsel to investigate links between the Trump campaign and Russia changed \u201ceverything.\u201d<\/p>\n

After joining the Mueller investigation, Barnett described an \u201cupside down\u201d situation \u201cwith attorneys drafting search warrants and getting agents to simply act as affiants.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then described what he viewed as a \u201cget Trump\u201d attitude by some in the office, which he said manifested itself in two ways.<\/p>\n

The first, he said, was that \u201cincidents involving Trump were taken in the most negative manner, or in some cases misinterpreted.\u201d The second was how members of Mueller\u2019s top team appeared to try to establish \u201cthe conviction there was \u2018something criminal there\u2019 and a competition as to which attorney was going to find it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barnett\u2019s view is not shared amongst all those who worked under Mueller\u2019s team.<\/p>\n

Former Justice Department official Andrew Weissmann, who has since endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, said that the former special counsel \u201cabsolutely\u201d let the American people down by not going harder on President Trump.
