\n The actors of \u201cRiverdale\u201d may not be safe from COVID-19, but at least their breath will be minty fresh.<\/p>\n

In a video<\/a> from the Vancouver, Canada, set of the show\u2019s fifth season, \u201cRiverdale\u201d actors KJ Apa and Camila Mendes take\u00a0a swig of mouthwash in an app<\/a>arent effort to stave off the coronavirus before a kissing scene.<\/p>\n

After locking arms and sipping, the actors pass off the cups to a gloved assistant and proceed to their intimate business.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur new normal is washing our mouths before every take of a make-out scene,\u201d Apa, 23, captioned the clip.<\/p>\n

But before you go swishing Oral-B ahead of your next Tinder date, beware: Mouthwash does absolutely nothing to prevent the spread of the disease, virology expert Vincent Racaniello told Insider<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s absurd to think that rinsing with mouthwash will make making out safe,\u201d said Racaniello, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Columbia University. \u201cMouthwash will not eliminate virus shed from the nose, for example, and will not eliminate all virus in saliva, either \u2014 it will be rapidly replenished from infected cells.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s unclear if any other actors have gone the mouthwash route, TV and movie sets are still grappling with the conundrum of filming romantic scenes in the age of COVID. Most have taken a page from the porn industry and established regular coronavirus testing and contact tracing.<\/p>\n

As for \u201cRiverdale,\u201d the actors returned to the set earlier this month and are under a strict quarantine.<\/p>\n

Fellow \u201cRiverdale\u201d actor Lili Reinhart, 24, said their extreme social<\/a>-distancing measures were anything but sexy. \u201cI genuinely feel like a prisoner,\u201d she told Nylon<\/a>. \u201cI cannot leave Canada. That doesn\u2019t feel good. You can\u2019t go home for Thanksgiving, can\u2019t visit your family. No one can come visit you unless they quarantine for two weeks. It just feels f\u2013ked.\u201d\n <\/div>\n
