\n Ex G-man: Breonna Protesters\u2019 Dangerous Lies<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAs if on cue,\u201d laments ex-FBI agent James Gagliano at the Washington Examiner<\/a>, \u201ccivil unrest\u201d erupted following the grand jury\u2019s decision in the Breonna Taylor case. \u201cAnd as usual, lies proliferated.\u201d Despite claims to the contrary, for instance, the grand jury determined police \u201cclearly identified themselves.\u201d The problem is that protesters \u201cdemand predetermined outcomes\u201d and insist \u201cevery police shooting of a minority must be draped in systemic racism\u201d and the officers convicted of murder. Yet that\u2019s not \u201cjustice\u201d; it strip<\/a>s cops of their due-process rights and the presumption of innocence. And it\u2019s dangerous: Attempts to assassinate cops are now \u201coccurring with shocking regularity.\u201d \u201cGood luck attracting our best and brightest to the policing profession.\u201d<\/p>\n

Election watch: Biden\u2019s Supreme Dilemma<\/strong><\/p>\n

Joe Biden\u2019s refusal to name possible Supreme Court choices proves he knows the battle over Ruth Ginsburg\u2019s seat \u201cis a shot in the arm for Trump\u2019s campaign \u2014 and a mortal danger to his,\u201d reasons Marc A. Thiessen at The Washington Post<\/a>. But Biden\u2019s silence \u201cis unsustainable. He says he should be allowed to pick Ginsburg\u2019s successor but won\u2019t say who his nominee might be.\u201d He\u2019s also \u201creluctant\u201d to declare whether he agrees with Democrats\u2019 threat to pack the court \u2014 since if he opposes it, he\u2019ll \u201cdispirit his base,\u201d and if he backs it, he\u2019ll \u201cdrive reluctant Trump voters for whom the Supreme Court is a deciding issue into Trump\u2019s arms once again.\u201d Fact is, though, he\u2019ll have to decide: The move can\u2019t be done without a \u201cPresident Biden\u2019s signature.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandemic journal: Yes, Schools Can Open Safely<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite worries from teachers and other public officials, researchers have found that \u201cK-12 school buildings have not played host to sizable COVID-19 outbreaks,\u201d reports Reason\u2019s Robby Soave<\/a>. In fact, a Brown University study showed that often \u201cthe rate of infection in schools was lower than in the rest of the community.\u201d Mayor de Blasio seems convinced that \u201cit\u2019s impossible to reopen schools until some undetermined, far-off point in the future,\u201d but the data just don\u2019t back that up. Even at colleges, which have seen an uptick in cases, consistent testing has been successful in controlling the outbreaks. Clearly, it\u2019s \u201cpossible to safely reopen schools,\u201d Soave argues. \u201cIt just takes planning, hard work and testing, testing, testing.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Blue Truth Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAmericans\u2019 ignorance about the demographics of criminal offending,\u201d Heather Mac Donald argues at The American Mind<\/a>, is allowing the \u201canti-cop narrative\u201d to \u201ccontinue destroying the institutions of law and order.\u201d One key mistake is to compare \u201cpolicing data to population ratios,\u201d because \u201cpolicing today is data-driven,\u201d and officers are deployed \u201cto where criminals prey on their victims.\u201d Officers cannot use their \u201clawful powers of enforcement\u201d without having \u201ca disparate impact on blacks, since blacks commit the lion\u2019s share of violent street crime.\u201d And they\u2019re \u201cfar more likely to encounter armed, violent and resisting suspects in minority neighborhoods.\u201d Departments should regularly hold press conferences \u201cmapp<\/a>ing out the incidence of crime and 911 calls, and overlaying that information with police deployment patterns.\u201d \u201cAmericans deserve the truth about crime and racial statistics\u201d from their governments.<\/p>\n

Urban beat: Clean Up NY\u2019s Sidewalk Trash<\/strong><\/p>\n

In normal times, observes Arpit Gupta at City Journal<\/a>, \u201cNew York City\u2019s sidewalks bustle with energy\u201d \u2014 but they also contain \u201csomething found in no other great city\u201d: piles of garbage. That\u2019s partly because the city lacks alleyways for dumpsters. Yet \u201cnoxious-smelling\u201d trash doesn\u2019t just harm the quality of life; it\u2019s \u201ca major factor behind New York\u2019s massive rat population, which acts as a vector for many diseases.\u201d Other cities that lack alleyways have found ways to avoid sidewalk trash, such as by using \u201csophisticated hydraulic trash pickups\u201d or underground garbage bins. Similar ideas and \u201cmarket-based pricing\u201d for trash collection could help Gotham. \u201cIf New York wants to remain great\u201d post-COVID, \u201cit must improve urban livability\u201d \u2014 and \u201cgetting garbage off the sidewalks\u201d is a good way to do that.<\/p>\n
