However, it may be the new privacy updates that are the most important. Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<p>There have been multiple additions, like light indicators near the battery display that show you that apps are using your microphone and camera, and clipboard notifications that tell you from where you\u2019re copying and pasting. The ones we talk about below are the ones we think will be most useful in keeping a lid on your personal data.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Precise_Location_options\"><\/span>Precise Location options<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Up to now, when apps requested to track your location, your options were either to allow it, block it, or allow it while the app was in use. Now you have an additional option: a toggle that lets you choose whether an app tracks your precise location, or a more approximate one. You\u2019ll have to adjust this on each individual\u00a0app, but it\u2019s definitely worth having the control.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1320138 lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"581\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/iOS-Precise-Location.jpg\" data-lazy=\"true\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/iOS-Precise-Location.jpg 479w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/iOS-Precise-Location-173x210.jpg 173w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/iOS-Precise-Location-223x270.jpg 223w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/09\/iOS-Precise-Location-111x135.jpg 111w\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>To access this, go to the Privacy menu in the Settings app, then go to Location Tracking. You\u2019ll see a list of all the apps that use Location Tracking, and on each one, you can turn off the switch that says \u201cPrecise Location.\u201d Each page also has an \u201capp explanation\u201d that details what the company does with your location information.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"App_Tracking_and_Targeted_Ads\"><\/span>App Tracking and Targeted Ads<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Similar to the above, there\u2019s an option to turn off apps tracking you across various websites, and one that lets you turn off personalized ads. Out of all the updates to iOS 14, it seems this is one of the most controversial, as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/08\/27\/facebook-vs-apple-ad-tracking\/\">the likes of Facebook<\/a> are pushing back against it. I have no doubt for some of you, that\u2019s all the more incentive to turn these off.<\/p>\n<p>The app tracking option is in the Privacy settings, under the Tracking submenu. It\u2019s the only toggle on this page. At the bottom of the Privacy menu is a submenu titled \u201cApple Advertising.\u201d Here\u2019s where you\u2019ll find the Personalized Ads toggle.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"App_and_photo_access\"><\/span>App and photo access<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Privacy menu also offers you the chance to control who has access to the various Apple apps on your phone, such as Health, the microphone, and most especially, your Photos. Each has a separate sub-menu on the Privacy settings, and in each you\u2019ll see which apps have requested permission to access those apps. For example, you can control which apps have requested access to your photo library.<\/p>\n<p>For things like Health, you can also toggle which specific health information each linked app has access to, and what it will send to Health. Play around with these settings until you\u2019ve removed all the apps that you don\u2019t want to have access.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Safaris_privacy_report\"><\/span>Safari\u2019s privacy report<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Safari now shows you all the trackers its stymied during your browsing sessions. The privacy report can be a little tricky to find, though. To start, go to Safari and open a website \u2014 any website. For some reason, you can\u2019t access this from a blank tab, at least not on the iPhone. Then tap the two As on the far left of the address bar. In the dropdown menu, you\u2019ll see the option to view the report.<\/p>\n<p>Once in the report, you\u2019ll be able to see the blocked trackers, which websites were contacted by the trackers, and view more details about how Safari blocks cross-site trackers.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s it!
